20. No Tears for the Dead (2014)

Gon was abandoned by his mother when he was quite young. He was brought up by the mafia men and when he grew up, he turned out to be a skilled hitman. Though he never found any emotions for any of his victims, he is ridden with guilt when he mistakenly kills an innocent young girl. He decides to retire from his career, but one last mission comes along his way. Following up on it, he discovers that he has a chance to redeem himself from the guilt that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

19. Star Trek Franchise (2009-2016)

What can be more fast-paced than travelling with the speed of light, and what fight sequence can be more thrilling than the one that takes place in space against some alien species. A reboot of the original ‘Star Trek series’, it follows the adventures of Captain James Kirk and his closest ally Spock as they travel aboard the USS Enterprise to explore the ends of the galaxy.

18. Robocop (1987)

It becomes more difficult to uphold the law the farther we move in time. This film is set in a dystopian society where the police department is severely underfunded and the city suffers as crime rages on. When one of the policemen encounters fatal injuries in one of the chases, he is declared dead. But he is actually not. He is used as a cyborg police, a Robocop who is fed with primary directives of serving the public and keeping them safe. While on the surface, his presence helps in eradicating crime and seems a success for the department, there is a secret directive that poses a question on his morality.

17. The Boondock Saints (1999)

Faith can be a strong driving force if one’s beliefs are strong enough. While criminals run free on the streets of Boston, two brothers decide to do something about it. They are driven by their Catholic faith and the sense of justice, becoming the vigilantes whom people begin to refer to as heroes. One criminal after another, they sweep the streets of Boston, cleaning the crime while getting their hands dirty. While they think that they are doing a favour to the world, Paul Smecker, an FBI agent doesn’t agree. He relentlessly chases the brothers, persistent in his belief that they, too, should be brought to justice like any other criminal.

16. Clear and Present Danger (1994)

This is the last instalment featuring Harrison Ford as the famous CIA analyst, Jack Ryan. Ryan finds himself in the position of the Deputy Director of the CIA when Jim Greer falls victim to cancer. Ryan tries to gain funding for CIA to support various covert operations. Meanwhile, a businessman is murdered and his connections with Columbian drug cartels come to light. Ryan realizes that an operation has been sanctioned, which may or may not involve the President’s approval. The methods of the people involved in this operation seem quite shady and Ryan has to look into it.

15. The Magnificent Seven (2016)

This film is the remake of the 1960 film of the same name and features the stellar cast of actors like Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, and Chris Pratt. It is set in 1879, in a small town of Rose Creek whose residents feel oppressed by the corrupt industrialist who has taken control of the whole town. The residents call upon a US Marshal to help them rid of the industrialist. The Marshal recruits a group of men, each of whom comes with a unique set of skills. From a Mexican fugitive to a Comanche warrior, the Marshal succeeds in bringing the best to solve the town’s problems.

14. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

This Western film tells the story of Dan Evans, played by Christian Bale, who is facing difficulties in paying the money he owes and providing for his family. When he is unable to pay back the money, his barn is set on fire which leaves his cattle dispersed. This leads to his encounter with the famous outlaw, Ben Wade and his gang. As the events unfold, Evans finds himself coming face to face with Wade again, this time leading to his capture. Evans and a couple of other men are tasked with escorting Wade to the afternoon 3:10 train that will take him to the Yuma Territorial Prison.

13. The Lost City of Z (2016)

At the beginning of the 20th century, it felt like most of the places had been explored by men. But, Percy Fawcett found a place, deep in the Amazon, that was uncharted and unaccounted for. He leads an expedition in the search of a civilization that he believes had lived, or maybe even continues to live in the jungles. He faces ridicule and rejection by other explorers, and even when the other events take up his time, he finds himself unable to let go of the quest. He returns to the jungle with his son, and makes some startling discoveries, but does not return to tell the tale. This film is based on a true story, a story that still hasn’t found a conclusion.

12. Patriot Games (1992)

John Krasinski is the newest in line to portray the role of the CIA analyst Jack Ryan, incepted by Tom Clancy. Before him, Harrison Ford donned this role a couple of times. ‘Patriot Games’ is set after the events of the 1990 film ‘The Hunt for Red October’. In this film, Jack Ryan has done his due in the CIA and is now enjoying his retirement in London. But life is not meant to be easy for Ryan. He witnesses a terrorist act by the IRA and succeeds in impeding it, killing one of the culprits in the process. When the other assailant, the brother of the one who was killed by Ryan, is arrested, it seems like the case is closed. But the man escapes and vows to exact revenge on Ryan.

11. Hwayi: A Monster Boy (2013)

When a plan goes awry, five criminals end up with a baby they had kidnapped. In the isolation of their deserted farm, they raise the boy, imparting him with the skills they had learnt over the years. Fourteen years later, the boy grows up to become a perfect criminal without having committed a crime yet. However, the occasion soon arrives when the boy is made to accompany the five criminals. There he shoots a man for the first time. Even though he had been prepared for this his whole life, he finds himself hesitating and then unable to stop once started. After committing the murder, Hwayi begins to question his place within the crime family.

10. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Based on the novel ‘The Short Timers’ by Gustav Hasford, this film was co-written and directed by the legendary director Stanley Kubrick and is the last film released before his death. It focuses on a platoon of US Army soldiers in the boot camp during the Vietnam War. Two privates, Joker and Pyle, become the central characters of the film. They are shown to struggle through boot camp under their tyrannical instructor. Somehow, they manage through it but find themselves in a worse place. The war. While the film’s prominent theme comes out to be the effect of war on men, the sheer pressure of survival forms another ground for discussion.

9. Watchmen (2009)

Based on the DC Comics of the same name, this film follows a different timeline, though draws in some important events in the history. With an ensemble cast of actors like Jeffery Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino and Matthew Goode, ‘Watchmen’ presented a different sort of superhero story. Set in the Cold War era, it shows superheroes who have given up their career as the caped crusaders. But, they are called back into action when one of them dies. The investigation leads them to stumble upon a conspiracy. They are faced with the moral obligations of being superheroes and their instincts as simple human beings.

8. The Usual Suspects (1995)

One can argue that there is not a whole lot of action on this film, but there certainly is the thrill of the chase. The film that has formed his own niche in the filmmaking business through its eccentric storytelling style, ‘The Usual Suspects’ isn’t your usual film. Five criminals come across the knowledge of emerald diamonds in the possession of a jewel smuggler. Feeling angst for the police over being rounded up for no reason, they decide to do something real to piss off the police. They decide to pull off a heist. What they don’t realise are the other factors working beside themselves, the more dangerous and life-threatening factors.

7. The Man from Nowhere (2010)

‘The Man from Nowhere’ is a Korean action thriller that follows the quest of a man to save a little girl. Tae-Sik runs a pawnshop and his interactions are limited. He is friends with So-mi, a girl whose mother is an addict. When So-mi’s mother steals drugs from a dangerous cartel, the men kidnap both the murder and daughter. This agitates Tae-Sik and he decides to track down the people who kidnapped the mother and daughter. The cartel members, at first, don’t consider him to be a threat, but when they discover that he is an ex-Army Intelligence officer, they realise that he is a much more dangerous man than they thought him to be.

6. Good Time (2017)

Connie and his younger brother pull off a heist at the bank, but at the crucial moment, they are apprehended by the police. While Nick is arrested, Connie succeeds in escaping. Feeling guilty over getting his brother in trouble, Connie tries to find ways to get him out. His desperation leads him deeper into the world of crime and he struggles to keep a hold of sanity while trying to find a way to save his brother and himself. One of the most underrated films of the year, ‘Good Time’ was another instance where Robert Pattinson showed just how incredible an actor he is. More people need to watch this film.

5. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Set in 1936, this film was the first instalment in the franchise followed the adventures, and misadventures, of the famous archaeologist, Indiana Jones. In this film, he runs against time and the Nazis to find the Ark of the Covenant. He is approached by a couple of government agents who want to know the whereabouts of his mentor and teacher, Abner Ravenwood. They believe that he is in the possession of an ancient artefact that plays a crucial role in finding what the Nazis want. Filled with action and adventures, the quest of Indiana Jones never gets old. While its successors fell rather flat as compared to it, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ holds its ground, even after all these years.

4. Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)

Bradley Thomas once had a bright career as a boxer, but lately, his life has been nothing short of bad decisions. His marriage is in shambles. He is particularly heartbroken when he discovers that his wife is seeing someone else. However, he tries to make things work and continues on his job as a drug mule. Not long after, he is caught in a gunfire between the police and the people for whom he had been smuggling drugs. When the struggle stops, Bradley is caught and is thrown into jail, where even more trouble stirs within the cooped compounds of the prison.

3. Fearless (2006)

Jet Li is one of the biggest names to come out of China. Like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, he is known for performing his own action sequences and stunts that leave the viewers in awe. This film follows the story of Huo Yuanjia. As a kid, he saw his father winning matches of martial arts. Even when he wanted to learn, his father didn’t teach him because of his asthmatic problem. When a cunning opponent defeats his father by cheating, Huo is hurt by the humiliation that his father faces. He learned martial arts on his own and becomes a champion. Soon, he is engulfed in arrogance and has to pay the price for it.

2. Fearless Hyena (1979)

Any list of action movies would be incomplete without mentioning the name of Jackie Chan. One of the biggest stars and one of the most loved actors across the world, Jackie Chan is a brand in himself. While there are so many movies on Amazon that feature this legendary actor, ‘Fearless Hyena’ is the one that stands out the most. The plot of this film is rather simple and one could say that for some time it was a common plotline of various Jackie Chan’s films. He plays the role of a man who learns kung-fu from him grandfather who advises him against displaying his skills in public. Not paying heed to his warnings, the man gets in trouble and his fighting style attracts enemies. Jackie Chan performs breath-taking stunts with absolute fluidity and you are left wondering how many bones he broke in this one.

1. Fist of Fury (1972)

It seems unimaginable to think that someone can ever replace Bruce Lee. His action sequences were on another level, and he proved quite early in his career that his skills were unparalleled. In his second feature film, he played the role of Chen Zhen who returns home to get married but is saddened when he receives the news of the death of his mentor. He is challenged by Japanese fighters who mock and insult him and his dead mentor and challenge him to a match in order to test his mettle. The fight sequences that follow are incredible and you might even need to slow them down because that’s how fast Bruce Lee was.
