‘Aladdin’ Dominates International Box Office with $121M

Disney’s ‘Aladdin‘ dominates the international box office with a weekend haul of $121M. The movie, which is based on the magical Arabic folktale, captured the top spot in almost all the international markets. The remake of 1992 animated classic lured families and kids which helped it to gather momentum during the first weekend. The three-day opening gross of the movie from the international box office is $207.1M.

Aladdin‘ hit the Chinese market with an impressive three-day haul of $18.7M. According to Disney, the movie is performing better than the 2014 Disney flick ‘Maleficent‘ and ‘Cinderella’ of 2015 in markets like Europe and China. The U.K. tops in the European markets with a sum of $8.4M in three days. The movie outperformed Disney’s pre-opening domestic estimates which were in the range between $75M and $85M for four days.

Italian market saw its second-highest opening weekend in 2019 with a $6.6M for ‘Aladdin,’ behind only to Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ ‘Aladdin’ also captured the top spot in the Spanish market with the second highest opening weekend record in 2019.

Mexico generated an estimated $9.2M in first three days for the movie, which is the highest opening for a Hollywood flick in Latin America in 2019. The movie also became the top Hollywood grosser in Indonesia and the second highest opener in India and Vietnam in 2019. In Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines, ‘Aladdin’ is in the third place in the highest opening week chart this year.

Disney’s 1992 movie, which is based on the Arabic folktale of the same name from the ‘One Thousand and One Nights,’ earned a massive $502M from the global market. The 2019 reboot features Mena Massoud in the titular role of Aladdin, the street urchin, while Will Smith plays the mighty and mischievous Genie. Naomi Scott portrays Jasmine, the Princess who falls for Aladdin. The other cast includes Marwan Kenzari, who plays the villainous Jafar, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen.

The movie is directed by Guy Ritchie from a screenplay he co-wrote with John August. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are the producers. Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves starrer ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum‘ collected a $24.8M from 74 markets this week. The movie touched the net gross mark of $74.4M worldwide.

The Warner Bros. live-action flick ‘Pokemon: Detective Pikachu‘ earned $24.3M from 72 markets. The movie collected a worldwide gross of $352.9M. The Disney-Marvel superhero movie ‘Avengers: Endgame’ continues its box office reign with a $15M from the international box office this week. The movie now stands at the record-breaking gross mark of $1.88B.

Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff shared her excitement with Variety in the 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” Cinemascore for ‘Aladdin.’ “The movie is performing exactly the way we were hoping,” said Taff. “We should see strong performance in the coming weeks as we get into the summer season,” she added. The success of ‘Aladdin’ proves the studio’s strategy of rebooting its animated classics like ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ and ‘The Jungle Book‘ is on the right track.
