Skarsgard was born to a Swedish couple with father Stellan Skarsgard who was an actor and mother My Skarsgard. Before he started following acting as a career, Skarsgard used to serve in the military at Sweden for a period of 18 months. In order to perfect his dialect, Skarsgard had to work with a teacher to correct his English accent.

During the shot, Alexander heard about True Blood and auditioned for the role of Bill Compton but the creator of the series decided that he was rather fit as Eric Northman. In the year 2017, Skarsgard was a co-star in the series Big Little Lies that aired on HBO.
