‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ season 1 premiered on January 7, 2019, on NBC. It aired for seven episodes and wrapped up on February 18, 2019.

The first five weeks showcased the first five preliminary rounds, after which the last two weeks concluded with the finals and finals: results. It was a huge hit with massive viewership numbers. However, fans were a bit skeptical if AGTC would be renewed for another season since it was branded as “the Olympics of talent”. It featured a shorlisted crew of the 50 best acts from Got Talent franchise, which happens to be a once-in-a-blue-moon event.

However, putting an end to all doubts, NBC announced on May 11, 2019, that AGTC has been renewed for a second season. The network has also announced a release date. ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ season 2 will premiere on January 6, 2020, at 8/7c. What is America’s Got Talent: The Champions About?

‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ brings in prominent performers from the previously broadcasted seasons of ‘America’s Got Talent’. The contestants are pitted against one another through multiple rounds of preliminaries so that they can climb up the ranks to participate in the grand finale. The winner wins a cash prize and receives the coveted title of America’s chosen “World Champion” within Got Talent. A twist in the format as compared to the parent show is that here, the contest is not telecast live on tv. Instead, the episodes are filmed and then pre-recorded clips are aired on television.

Season 1 of AGTC featured approximately 50 participants from former installments of the Got Talent franchise. The participating contestants ranged from winners to quarter-finalists and semi-finalists as well as performers who managed to leave a mark with their remarkable showmanship. There was a series of five preliminary rounds, held in batches of 10. Only one winner was decided per round — chosen by a panel of 50 “superfans” representing the 50 American states. Judges could use the golden buzzer if they wanted to push anyone directly to the finals.

After the preliminaries, 12 finalists made it to the grand finale. Five were selected via the judges’ golden buzzers, five through audience votes, and two from wildcard entries. After the finals, close-up magician Shin Lim was declared as the winner of The Champions season 1.

‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’, after its release, garnered an average rating of 2.2 among adults in the 18-49 demography. It opened to 12.4 million viewers, pushing it up to become the season’s “#1 most-watched alternative series and the most-watched new alternative series on any broadcast network since the debut of Little Big Shots.

Season 2 will also follow a similar format with no option for live audience voting. Each of the contest’s preliminaries will comprise of eight participants and 10 will make it to the finals — five from Golden Buzzers and five from public votes. Among the finalists, the one who makes it to be the top will be crowned as the winner for the second season.
