Animal Kingdom Plot: What is it about?
‘Animal Kingdom’ centers around Cody family, from Southern California, who resort to a life of crime to fuel their excessive lifestyles. As the Cody family falls apart, Smurf, family’s matriarch, looks to rebuild their legacy and establish their supremacy over the town. However, it is not an easy task to keep all her boys in control. The dominance of the matriarch over her sons, thus, emerges as an important theme that reverberates across the seasons.
Smurf relies a lot on her grandson to handle the day to day operations. However, J, the grandson, is not afraid to bite the hand that feeds it, and there is a power struggle between Smurf and him. Moreover, Smurf might be protective of her family, but there is a detective who has been after them for years, named Pearce, and sometimes she narcs on her family members to keep them in line. It is an unusual punishment, but it reminds them who is boss.
In season 4, we see Smurf’s youth in flashbacks. We see her robbing banks with her boyfriend and his gang. As viewers, we become aware that her life has always been wild beyond imagination. More importantly, we get to know how she rose to the top. The season ends with The Codys trying to protect their reputation as friends and enemies from the past close in.
Season 5 is expected to continue the twisty story of the Cody family. The struggle of power will intensify and some of the important characters many lose their lives in the process.
Should You Watch Animal Kingdom?
Definitely, if you love crime dramas. Otherwise, you can choose to stay away.
What stands out about the show is the gritty storyline. The Cody family is dysfunctional as far as families go, and a lot of the drama from that makes up the content for the show. However, in some parts, all of the sex and violence begins to feel a little gratuitous. Some might argue that it goes to service the narrative, but it is overused, to the extent that it does not really pad the storyline, but becomes a major aspect of it. The title of the show suggests that everyone is out there looking for themselves, and only the fittest will survive. Overall, the show is about trying to choose between putting one’s family, or oneself first, and ‘Animal Kingdom’ uses good drama to show just that.
