6 Anime You Must Watch if You Love That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ is one of the best isekai anime to have come out in recent times. The anime aired its last episode of the first season this year in the month of March. It is really entertaining and fun with a fresh take on an old genre and visually appealing animation. Satoru Mikami is an ordinary 37-year-old man. He is a corporate worker and seems content with his life in the city even though he is still single.

One day, Mikami meets his demise after an assailant stabs him to death. But as he lies there bleeding to death, he hears someone chanting something. Later, he regains consciousness and wakes up to find that now he is just a lump of blue goop or slime and the world that he is in is not Earth. He also learns that he has the power to devour anything and mimic its ability, a power which comes in handy throughout the anime.

There are a total of 24 episodes in the first season of this anime. Since the second is set to release next year, why not enjoy a bunch of anime that explore similar ideas and concepts? Here’s the list of best anime similar to ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’ that are our recommendations. You can watch several of these anime like ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’ on Netflix, Crunchyroll or Hulu.

6. Overlord (2015)

Well, no doubt about why ‘Overlord’ makes the cut for this list. I mean, if you are going to have a list about some of the best isekai anime, then obviously you need to have ‘Overlord’. ‘Overlord’ is a really popular anime and ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ has a similar premise to it. For starters, ‘Overlord’ is also about a human who gets stuck in another world where he is overpowered. There is a difference though between these two anime. While the protagonist in ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ has to die to go to a new world, the protagonist from ‘Overlord’ does not die.

The anime revolves around a virtual reality game, Yggdrasil. A player by the name of Momonga is one of the oldest and most powerful players of the game. But now the servers of the game are finally going to shut down. Momonga decides to stay in the game as long as the servers are on. But when even after midnight the servers are still running, he decides to explore the game. He learns that the in-game characters have developed a personality of their own and it seems he is the most powerful being there. This is a highly entertaining anime which will surely get you hooked.

5. Log Horizon (2013)

What attracts many people to ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ is getting whisked to a fantasy world. Here they have the chance to start afresh or do something different. That is a popular and relatable trope in isekai anime; relatable in the sense that we all fell that way and want to have that chance. Though they never really wished for it, thousands of gamers in ‘Log Horizon’ get trapped in an MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) game named Elder Tale. This happens after the game receives a new update.

Among those gamers is Shiroe. Though unsocial and awkward in real life, he is a veteran of the game and does not take long to recover from the shock. He decides to get up and explore the limits of the game and experience this new reality of his. Joining him is his friend Naotsugu, who is unfortunate enough to get trapped in the game after logging in for the first time in many years. Then there’s Akatsuki, an assassin, who considers Shiroe as her master. Whatever it be, Shiroe’s life is not going to be a boring one. He needs to explore and interact with other players as well as the non-playable characters or NPCs if he is to bring stability in this world.

4. Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (2018)

‘Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu’ is again an isekai anime that uses various popular and entertaining tropes of the genre. It gets a spot on this list because obviously, it is about the main character ending up in a fantasy land. But I find that there is some similarity between the main characters. Both the protagonist of each anime are socially awkward and have not been in a relationship. Both of them get powers that give evil vibes, but they try to use it for good and help other people.

Takuma Sakamoto is brilliant at the MMORPG game Cross Reverie. He plays as Demon King Diablo who takes down players like it’s nothing and owns the rarest of artifacts. One day, he finds himself being summoned to a fantasy land. He is in his Diablo getup. The two pretty girls who summoned him try to cast a spell to enslave him. But obviously, he is more powerful and their spell soon ends with him making them his slaves. Now, Diablo must find a way to unbind the spell while exploring this new world and living up to his character of Diablo.

3. Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. (2017)

‘Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.’ is a fun little isekai adventure anime. Though it is not as entertaining to watch as ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ it is still worth a try if you liked the latter. The plots of both these anime are quite similar. The main character dies but gets a chance to live again in a fantasy world. The difference is that while the protagonist of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ wakes up as a powerful slime monster, here the protagonist gets a wish: he can choose whatever he wishes to take with him to this new fantasy land.

Touya Mochizuki dies after God strikes him down with thunder. It is a mistake on the Almighty’s part and he decides to grant Touya a wish to live again in a magic/fantasy world. Also, he can take any item he wants with him. Touya decides to take his smartphone and thus starts his journey in this new magical world. He finds out that he has an affinity for magic, while cute girls fight for his love. Yes, romance, magic, fantasy, and his smartphone. Touya has got it all. All that remains is for him to explore his new reality and find out all the awesome secrets.

2. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (2016)

If the plot or rather the premise of ‘Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.’ sounds familiar, it is probably because of the next anime on this list. ‘Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!’ better known as KonoSuba is one of the most popular isekai anime in recent times. The anime has its share of similarities with ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’. Here too the protagonist dies and gets a chance to be reincarnated in a magical/fantasy world which is the dream of every gamer.

However, the difference between ‘KonoSuba’ and ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ is that while the protagonist in the latter becomes powerful, the protagonist of ‘KonoSuba’ is not fortunate enough to experience that power. Kazuma Satou dies a pathetic and laughable death (you have to watch it to get it). But it seems there’s a second chance at life. Aqua is a goddess who decides where these departed souls will go. She provides Kazuma with a choice: he can simply accept his fate and move on to heaven or he can choose to get reincarnated in fantasy land. Of course, he chooses the latter option. He is also allowed to take whatever he wants with him. Kazuma tries to be smart and decides to take the goddess Aqua with him. Of course, it is a great decision to have a goddess watch your back, right? Wrong! Kazuma learns the hard way that Aqua is useless and he needs to earn his living to survive here. I guess heaven was not a bad choice after all.

1. Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku (2018)

‘Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku’ is a fairly recent isekai anime which came out last year. If you liked ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime’ because of its overpowered main character being in an isekai world, then ‘Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku’ is an anime you will definitely enjoy. Ichirou Suzuki is a programmer. So obviously he has a tough life. His job is to beta test games and finding bugs. Lately, the work has been overwhelming and so demanding that he barely gets to sleep.

One day, Suzuki finally gets to close his eyes and get some sleep. But when he wakes up, it seems like he has been transported to a different world which sort of looks like an environment of an RPG game. It looks like this world is a mixture of RPG games that Ichirou has been testing out. Even his name has somehow become Satou, the character he uses to test the games. But before he has a chance to realize his state fully, a couple of lizardmen attack him, forcing him to use a powerful magic spell. He is successful in driving them away but his level rises up pretty quickly and stands at 310. This means he has almost maximized his stats. Now, as one of the most powerful beings in this world, Satou starts to explore this universe.
