‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ is a supernatural comedy television series based on characters by Sam Raimi. It airs on Starz and first premiered on October 31, 2015. If you are familiar with the ‘Evil Dead‘ universe by Raimi, and happened to love the combination of supernatural elements and horror comedy, then you will love this show.
‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ is set after a period of 30 years has passed from the airing of the first three ‘Evil Dead’ films. It is a sequel which follows the story of Ash Williams who is now seen working at the “Value Stop”. To save humanity, he decides to fight against the Evil Dead along with Pablo and Kelly.
We all remember Deadites from the original movies and how Ash, our favorite irresponsible and immature hero, stepped in to stop them. You will love how this show takes the story forward. Critics have noted the similarity in tone, saying, “True to the movies that spawned it, Ash vs Evil Dead is a gory, hilarious, and audacious resurrection of Sam Raimi’s beloved horror franchise.”
Ash vs Evil Dead Cast: Who is in it?
The cast of the show is led by Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. Bruce returns from the film franchise to reprise his role. Campbell spoke about his character to Entertainment Weekly, saying “Ash has survivor’s guilt. You could have a heyday with his PTSD. He’s a war vet. He doesn’t want to talk about it, and he’ll lie about that stump on his hand to impress the ladies. This is a guy who’s got some issues. He’s emotionally stunted. But, he’s the guy you want in the foxhole next to you.” When the series starts we see Ash has become the de facto protector of the Necronomicon and has been working odd jobs.
The other cast members are Ray Santiago as Pablo Simon Bolivar, Ash’s loyal sidekick and colleague. He is one of the few people who believe Ash’s stories and calls him ‘El Jefe’ or ‘the boss’ as a sign of respect. Dana DeLorenzo appears as Kelly Maxwell or Sorceress Kaya, a co-worker of Pablo and Ash, who is initially reluctant to fight the Deadites but gets drawn in after she is orphaned. There are several other major characters and recurring cast members who help weave a visually enriching tale.
Ash vs Evil Dead Plot: What is it about?
Ash Williams, our hero from the films, has led thirty years of his life (since the show is set 30 years after the events of the films) avoiding maturity, responsibility, and the terrors that the Evil Dead bring. Not a lot of people believe him, and he is snubbed and called Ashy Slashy. However, when the Deadite plague comes and threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash becomes the only hope of humanity.
This time he has two sidekicks as well. If you are a fan of the movies, the most obvious question would be how the series shapes up in comparison. Well, we are here to tell you that the showrunners do a pretty good job of it. The only complaint we have is that the short episodes often lead to situations where the show ends on an abrupt note, not a cliffhanger, just a sudden ending, say during a battle or mid-possession. This makes the viewing experience a little bumpy. That aside, we loved how the characters have been fleshed out in this series. Up until now, we did not know a lot about Ash, his work, or his life. The show gets the chance to lay all that out for us.
There have been parts where Ash’s character shows inconsistencies. For example, we see a goofy and irresponsible man who is intent on hitting on women and killing Deadites. However, Ash shows emotional maturity here, and even genuine regret when the woman he was hitting on happens to die. In the very next sequence, he reverts back to his usual sleazy nature when he wants to get a last look at her breasts before cutting her up. This character dichotomy is not quite understandable. However, if you are willing to look past those, you are in for a ride of your life as Ash and his friends take on the Evil Dead to save humanity.
Ash vs Evil Dead Season 4 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ Season 3 premiered on February 25, 2018. On 20th April 2018, Starz announced that the series had been canceled after the third season. This is most likely due to a steadily declining viewership which left the network with no choice.
Bruce Campbell said during the time of the cancellation that “Ash vs. Evil Dead has been the ride of a lifetime. Ash Williams was the role of a lifetime. It was an honor to reunite with Evil Dead partners Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi to give our tireless fans another taste of the outrageous horror/comedy they demanded. I will always be grateful to Starz for the opportunity to revisit the franchise that launched our careers”.
Though, fans should not lose all their hopes. Before the show was officially cancelled, showrunners had talked about post-apocalyptic future setting that would be like a cross between ‘Mad Max‘ and ‘Fallout‘, but with robots. So, there’s still a slim possibility that some other network picks up the show at some point in future. If that happens, we will update you about ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ Season 4 release date.
