We here at The Cinemaholic don’t shy away from making lists. At the same time, though, we are also completely cognizant of the fact that lists are subjective in nature. The purpose of publishing lists is not claim any authority but rather to generate conversation; which is what I’m hoping BBC also wants to achieve: to invigorate a healthy conversation around the greatest movies of the 21st century.
A few months back, we, at The Cinemaholic, had published a similar list. (That you can read here). I’m glad to report that 38 out of the 50 movies in our list also has found a place in BBC’s list. If nothing else, it does indicate that our cinematic tastes are not much different from that of many of the internationally-recognized movie critics.
As far as the list itself is concerned, I have to say I’m not surprised by the fact that top spot went to ‘Mulholland Drive’ (it is No.4 on our list). It is a phenomenal film whose stature will keep on growing with passing time. I’m also extremely glad by presence of ‘Boyhood’ at No.5. After Boyhood’s Best Picture loss to Birdman, I had written this:
“12 Years is a long time. During those 12 years of its making and past 1 year of glory and heartbreak, ‘Boyhood’ has lived a life of its own. From here on it will be free to live a life without any pressures or expectations. And one day, it will achieve the greatness, like several other films before it, beyond what a piece of golden statuette can promise or guarantee.”
I’m very happy that my gut feeling at that time is proving to be true. Only, I hadn’t realized that ‘Boyhood’ would so soon be on track to the well-deserved greatness.
Some of my other favorites that I thought earned their place in the list: ‘In the Mood For Love, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, ‘, ‘The Tree of Life (No.1, No.2 and No.5 respectively on our list).
Notable exclusions: ‘Gravity’, ‘Birdman’, ‘Y Tu Mamá También’, ‘Room’
