Below Deck is a reality television series that was announced in April 2012 but first aired in July 2013 on the Bravo channel. The creator of the show is Mark Cronin, and it is directed by Marc Cooper. As it’s a show about a group of people working on a yacht, the producers booked a Caribbean charter for five weeks on the 50-meter yacht called ‘Cuor di Leone’, and for the series, they named it ‘Honor.’

After being announced in April 2012, Below Deck debuted on July 1, 2013. Season 1 had 11 episodes and aired till September 9, 2013. In August 2013, Bravo announced the average viewer’s list, which was around 1.4 million per episode, which led to the renewal of season two.

Season two premiered on August 12, 2014, featuring four returning and other new cast members. Shot in Ohana, the season had 13 episodes, which concluded on November 4, 2014. Season 2’s finale was the highest-rated episode, resulting in the renewal of season 3. Season three was renewed and premiered on August 25, 2015. Filmed in the Bahamas, the series consisted of 15 episodes, airing till December 1, 2015.

The renewal of the fourth season happened on September 6, 2016. It featured 14 episodes, and the final episode had an air date of December 6, 2016. The announcement of the renewal of the fifth season was made on July 17, 2017, which premiered on September 5, 2017, with 15 episodes in total and concluded on December 12, 2017. The sixth season premiered on October 2, 2018. It was again renewed for a seventh season that debuted in October 2019.

With season 7 having concluded, you must be wondering if it will be renewed for an eighth installment. Here’s everything we know about Below Deck season 8.

Below Deck Cast: Who’s in it?

What with the mandate of being reality TV about a vocation (and by extension even a lifestyle), you would expect Below Deck to involve actual crewmen on board. As the official sources had once confirmed, Below Deck does pick its cast based on a pseudo-audition to get a tried-and-tested ensemble with good chemistry. However, all of the people featured in the show are actual crewmen by profession, and not stage actors.

There are two takeaways from this: one, the show thrives on creating drama to spice things up, and two, there is a consistent ensemble cast at least throughout one season. Of course, as any show like this cannot stay static to keep things fresh over the seasons, members of the crew leaving or being fired is not exactly uncommon for the show.

The one true constant is Lee Rosbach, captain of Honor (the megayacht on which almost the entirety of the show has been shot). Other than Lee, there have been many persistent familiar faces across seasons as well – Ben Robinson has been the iconic chef of Honor, and Kate Chastain has been the stewardess over several seasons without whom the show just does not feel the same.

Season 7 takes place on Valor and Captain Lee Rosbach makes a comeback. Other than him, Kate Chastain – Chief Stewardess, Simone Mashile – 2nd Stewardess, Courtney Skippon – 3rd Stewardess, Kevin Dobson – Chef, Ashton Pienaar – Bosun, Brian de Saint Pern – Lead Deckhand, Tanner Sterback -Deckhand Abbi Murphy – Deckhand are included in the main cast.

New additions for the upcoming season have not been announced yet. Kate, Ashton, and Captain Lee should definitely return but the roster might undergo changes as far as additional members are concerned.

What is Below Deck about?

As the name itself clarifies quite sufficiently, Below Deck is a reality TV show about the lives of the crew members on a mega-yacht. Likewise, the show is set inside a mega-yacht previously called Cuor Di Leone, changed to ‘Honour’ exclusively for the show. The usual episodes feature the goings-on in between the crew members as the vessel sets its course during the charter season.

Like many reality TV shows on Bravo, the show does take its license to micromanage and fine-tune the flow to give functional setpieces and the frame of a soap opera with exotic yacht-cruising locations acting as the backdrops. Plotwise, therefore, expect no more than the average propped-up dosage of Bravo soap wrapped up in the stylistic guise of a tele-documentary.

The show is therefore based less on any overarching plot momentum – speaking in terms of fiction since it is essentially a soap opera – so much as it is character-driven. Season 7 takes place on the Valor as Captain Lee, Kate, and Ashton are joined by six new crew members to cruise across the South East Asian seas.

The season follows a similar format like its predecessors. Each episode is dedicated to a fresh group of passengers, some of whom are millionaires and some, friends partying hard. The Yachties know to work hard and also party hard, and they live by the motto, ‘Work Hard, Play Harder’. Hence, the exotic perks, marine adventure, and incredible experiences are the rewards for their tiring work.

Toward the end, former ‘The Real Housewife of Orange County‘ star Alexis Bellino arrives on-board with her new beau to celebrate her recent divorce. Lee takes a decision that involves Rhylee and Ashton is compelled to change his management style. Kate invites Tanner for a sleepover, which leads to a fight regarding Brian and Courtney.

Season 8 will embrace the same format when it’s renewed and will follow the ‘Below Deck’ crew as they embark on another luxe cruise across the high seas.

Below Deck Season 8 Release Date: When will it premiere?

Below Deck season 7 premiered on October 7, 2019, on Bravo.  Just after season 7 started, the makers had already prepped up for season 8. Casting agents from Diana Wallace Casting posted ads, asking for applications from new crew members and experienced yachties to apply.

The ad reads as follows: “Know someone who needs to be on the upcoming season of @belowdeckbravo?! Now casting ALL positions of experienced yachties for Season 8!! Tag your favorite crew below, or email your CV + a bit about yourself to [email protected]!”

So yes, season 8 is definitely happening. What we don’t have is a release schedule yet. But if things go according to plan, ‘Below Deck’ season 8 will most likely premiere sometime in October 2020.
