2014 was a great year for Cinema and the level of competition was at a high. It was a year where in which most of the great films had a darker and heavier tone than usual. Films such as Whiplash, Nightcrawler, Gone Girl and Fox Catcher had grabbed all the buzz.

There were however a number of great comedies films that flew under many audiences’ radars. From dark comedies like Innaritu’s ‘Birdman’, to entertainment flicks like ‘Neighbors’. From ‘Artsy Visuals’ like Grand Budapest Hotel’ to worthy sequels like 22 Jump Street, 2014 had it all. Today in the list we will be looking at the top comedy films of 2014.

8. Neighbors (2014)

For me, Neighbors came in as a pleasant surprise. Everything about the film is a disaster waiting to happen and yet the film manages to get away with it, and make you enjoy at the same time. Starring Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, the humor is very evenly spread between its well-matched stars.

Byrne steals the show here despite very entertaining performances from both Efron and Rogen. She is able to showcase her great comedic chops which still mantaining to hold together her conflicted character. It is when things quickly escalate that the comedy hits its stride and rarely relents.

7. 22 Jump Street (2014)

Boasting even more of the bro-mantic chemistry between its stars– and even more of the goofy, good-natured humour, 22 Jump Street is the rare sequel that lives up to its original. While it features a lot of vulgar, slapstick humour, it is not exactly brain dead and stupid.

22 Jump street is a film fully aware of what it wants to be and that is its greatest strength. The fact that it does not take itself too seriously, makes it more laughable and funny. The end credits of the film is one of the best you will ever see.

From start to finish, The Interview is simply a joy to watch. It is stupid at times but the boldness and the sheer desperation to force a giggle becomes admirable as the movie finishes.

1. Birdman (2014)

Birdman is a strange dark comedy film compared to the rest of the films on the list. Many may even see it as a dark drama, but it remains on the list due to its tragic comic characters, and well it is funny as hell. The film stars Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts and Zack Galifianakis.

Another masterpiece from 2014, Birdman is a unique, ambitious piece of cinema that covers an extremely layered story in a brilliant technical showcase. Every performance in the film is a home run.
