6. Beauty and the Beast

This fantasy film is one of the best examples of a live-action musical. The film sees Gru team up with Dru, his brother to try to stop a villain called Balthazar Bratt. 4. The Boss Baby

This film stars some notable actors in the voicing department, including Alec Baldwin who voices the titular baby. The story is about Tim Templeton, a single child who suddenly has a brother in his life one day. As he struggles to adjust to the fact that his parents divide their attention between him and his sibling, he uncovers a conspiracy that the baby is actually some honcho from a company that is researching why babies are no longer as popular as pets. A movie that explores the tug of war for affection and how nurturing it might be, the film also explores the acceptance of a sibling and learning to share affection than to hog it all for oneself.

 

3. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

This story is about two kids who create a comic of the titular character and like all kids, they are pranksters and imaginative. However, their principal seeks to destroy their friendship so they manage to hypnotize him and make him believe that he is the titular character. When the town is attacked by German professor seeking to eradicate laughter, the kids and Captain Underpants saves the situation. Ultimately Krupp, the principal aka Underpants, has a change of heart when he wins the affection of the shy cafeteria lady and realizes the redemption that friendship offers. A thoughtful and well-made film, this movie is immensely enjoyable for people of all ages.

 

2. The Lego Batman Movie

This movie sees Batman resume his fight against the Joker to try to save Gotham. Joker, who is sent to the phantom zone returns with all notable villains including Sauron, Voldemort, King Kong. Batman teams up to try and stop them. The film uses self-reflexive humor, often making fun of the tropes that define the Batman character and the comics. The film becomes an exercise in showing how teamwork can save situations as the entire city comes together to stop it from splitting. Batman goes through a character change and learns to value other people thus beginning his own redemption.

 

1. Coco

This film obviously tops the list as it is generating good Oscar buzz and has been lauded by critics and audiences alike. The concept is slightly based on the Mexican festival of the day of the dead. The story follows Miguel as he goes to the land of the dead and seeks the help of his musician great-grandfather. In the process, he uncovers a plot of treachery and the fact that a man had used his grandfather’s songs to become famous. The film speaks of themes such as reconciliation with one’s family, apologia and speaks to the cutthroat nature of certain people. An educational film, which your kid is bound to enjoy, be sure to pay attention to it, for it definitely will have something for you to learn as well.
