How did Bill Nye earn his money and wealth?
Bill Nye is a science commentator, mechanical engineer and television presenter who is popularly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy. His formal name is William Sanford Nye and he was born on November 27, 1955, in Washington DC. After he finished his schooling, Nye studied at the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. He graduated in 1977 with a BS in mechanical engineering.
Nye started his professional career at Boeing Corporation and Sundstrand Data Control where he joined as an engineer. He invented a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube which is used on Boeing 747 airplanes while working at Boeing.
Nye took part in a Steve Martin look-alike contest which he won in 1978. Post his win in the contest, Nye took up standup comedy. He realized that he loved to make people laugh and thus he started to moonlight as a comedian while still working at Boeing during the day. He volunteered as a “Science Explainer” during the weekends at the Pacific Science Center. He has also participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. He quit Boeing in 1986 as he wanted to pursue a career in comedy. During his college 10 year reunion, Nye spoke with Sagan with whom he shared that he wanted to start a science television program for children. Sagan advised him to focus on pure science rather than technology. He worked as a writer/actor at “Almost Live!”, a local sketch comedy TV show. He got an opportunity to fill in another guests slot and managed to showcase an interesting and comical demonstration on scientific stuff. He was successful in his role as Bill Bye the Science Guy and won a talent Emmy award from National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Nye has also been a part of “Fabulous Wetlands” as well as Disney Channel’s “All-New Mickey Mouse Club”. He assisted Dr. Emmett Brown in the live-action educational TV show “Back to the Future: The Animated Series”. He started “Bill Bye the Science Guy” in 1993 for KCTS-TV. It was the first program in the US to run concurrently on commercial and public stations. Its popularity made it one of the most watched shows from 1993 to 1998 and it won 19 awards out of 23 nominations in the Emmy Awards. Nye later joined “BattleBots” as well as “100 Greatest Discoveries”.
Nye has written books titled “Bill Nye the Science Guy: Stop the Rock!” (1996), “Undeniable: Evolution and Science of Creation” (2014 and “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World” (2015). He has always been rejected 4 times by NASA’s astronaut training program.
