Black Clover Plot:

Black Clover is set in a fantastical world filled with magic called the Clover Kingdom, and focuses on the story of a young boy called Asta.

A loud and energetic orphan, Asta dreams of becoming a magician, but unfortunately, he possesses no magical powers. Despite knowing that magic does not flow through his veins, Asta remains determined to be crowned Wizard King – the title bestowed upon the most powerful mage in the land. Asta’s childhood friend and rival Yuno has the same dream, but to Asta’s despair, Yuno actually possesses powerful magical abilities. However, Asta remains undaunted and keeps training day in day out, hoping to awaken his magical powers one day.

As the years roll by, Asta and Yuno reach the age of 15 – the age when youngsters are awarded their own grimoires, which are magical books which allow those with magic to utilize their powers to their full potential. With hope still in his heart, Asta attends the grimoire handing out ceremony and sees Yuno, who possesses powerful wind magic, being handed a legendary four-leaf clover grimoire. When Asta’s turn comes, he gets nothing.

Dejected and heartbroken, Asta leaves, but soon sees Yuno being attacked by a mage who is looking to steal his four-leaf clover grimoire. Despite being hopelessly outgunned, Asta’s goodness gets the better of him, and he rushes to Yuno’s aid. Somehow, Asta manages to defeat the rogue mage, and his will to keep fighting results in the unthinkable – Asta is rewarded with his own grimoire which, incidentally, happens to be an unheard of black five-leaf clover grimoire.

With Asta now having his own magical powers, the two childhood friends set out to explore the world with the ambition of being crowned Wizard King. The show thus follows the adventures and misadventures of the two friends as they look to brave many dangers and be crowned the most powerful mage in the kingdom.

Black Clover Characters:

While Black Clover has dozens of characters, there are only three main characters in the show. Below, we’ve provided you with fairly detailed backgrounds on each of the three main characters.

[WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD]

Asta: The main protagonist of the show, Asta was orphaned at a young age and grew up at a church in the village of Hage. A short young man with an exceptionally muscular build, Asta is shown to be a skilled swordsman. Despite being born without magical powers, Asta dreams of becoming a mage and being crowned the Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom. His wishes partially come true when he saves Yuno from a rogue mage and gets an unheard of black five-clover grimoire, which awakens tremendously powerful magic in him. When Asta activates his Black Asta form, he grows immensely powerful, and black magic courses through his veins.

In this form, Asta’s right arm becomes the conduit for black magic, while his right shoulder sprouts black wings. Black horns start to grow from the right side of his head, while his right eye glows red and turns into a slit. As far as Asta’s personality is concerned, he is shown to be an energetic and cheerful lad, who does not think twice about being loud. Asta can often be shouting out his thoughts and goals, and this causes much annoyance among his friends and party members. As the show progresses, Asta grows more powerful, and eventually ends up joining the Clover Kingdom’s Black Bulls and Royal Knights factions, where he holds the rank of a 3rd Class Junior Magic Knight.

Yuno: Another main character in the show, Yuno is an orphan who grew up with Asta in the same church, and the two share a long history of friendship. Born with powerful magical abilities, Yuno possesses abilities related to wind magic, spirit magic, creation magic, and reinforcement magic, and is a force to be reckoned with. Using wind magic, Yuno can put his opponents to shame with tornadoes and whirlwinds, while creation magic grants him the power to create shapes and objects out of wind. Using spirit magic, Yuno can summon a spirit to assist him in battle, while reinforcement magic allows him to increase his physical abilities such as strength, speed, and durability.

When Yuno turns 15, he is handed a legendary four-leaf clover grimoire, which not only augments his powers but also serves as a symbol of the power he wields. Unlike Asta, Yuno is shown to have a calm and emotionless demeanour. However, like Asta, Yuno is driven by his desire to be crowned the Wizard King, and he also has the unrelenting willpower and tenacity Asta has.

Noelle Silva: The third main character in the show, Noelle comes from royal ancestry and is the second daughter of the Clover Kingdom’s House Silva. Like Yuno, Noelle is also born with magical abilities, and boasts mastery over water magic, creation magic, and reinforcement magic. At the age of 15, she receives a three-leaf clover grimoire, which allows her to amplify her magical abilities and use them to devastating effectiveness.

Having grown up in a royal family, Noelle often appears to be arrogant and vain. She is also shown to be sore loser, and has a hard time accepting her own failures and/or mistakes. Despite this reserved and haughty attitude, Noelle can sometimes be seen genuinely displaying pleasure. Like Asta, Noelle is a 3rd Class Junior Magic Knight and is part of the Black Bulls and Royal Knights factions in Clover Kingdom.
