‘Black-ish’ is an American sitcom that airs on ABC, and first premiered on September 24, 2014. The series has been created by Kenya Barris. It has ABC Studios, Khalabo Ink Society, Cinema Gypsy Productions, Principato-Young Entertainment, and Artists First as the companies backing the project. Anthony Anderson, Brian Dobbins, Helen Sugland, Jonathan Groff, Kenya Barris, Kenny Smith, Larry Wilmore, Paul Young, Laurence Fishburne, Peter Principato, and Tom Russo are on board as the executive producers.
The show is a comedy centered on an upper-middle-class African-American family, the Johnsons. It is known for tackling hot-button issues like police brutality, Black Lives Matter and the N-word. Needless to say that the social relevance and timely pertinence of the show quickly made it popular among the viewers. Critics too praised the series for the mixed cast, engaging with cultural issues, and for strong performances from actors, especially Lawrence Fishburne.
The series has become so popular that it has already given rise to a spin-off, titled ‘Grown-ish’ that follows the journey of the eldest Johnson daughter as she heads off for college. The network seems to be eager to expand the franchise, and capitalize on the popularity of the series, and thus they greenlit another spin-off recently, titled ‘Mixed-ish’ that will follow the experiences of Rainbow Johnson, who grew up in a mixed-race family in the ’80s.
Black-ish Cast: Who is in it?
The main cast members of ‘Black-ish’ includes Anthony Anderson as Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow, Marcus Scribner as Andre Jr., Miles Brown as Jack, Marsai Martin as Diane, Jenifer Lewis as Ruby, Laurence Fishburne as Pops, Peter Mackenzie as Mr. Stevens and Deon Cole as Charlie Telphy. The main cast is bolstered by the presence of a strong cast of recurring actors that includes talents like Lawrence Fishburne, who appears in the role of Earl “Pops” Johnson, that is, Dre’s father.
Hopefully, in the upcoming season, we will see the main cast members return, and we just might be greeted with some new characters who the Johnson family interacts with, and who are bound to make the interesting sitcom all the more exciting.
