‘Black Lightning’ is a DC comics superhero TV show developed by Salim Akil, his wife Mara Brock Akil & Greg Berlanti, who is also known as the father of the DC tv universe which spawned with the inception of ‘Arrow’ back in 2012. However, ‘Black Lightning’ is not connected to the Arrowverse shows but a future crossover may be in the cards; if the showrunners decide to go with the idea. The series airs on the CW and first premiered on January 16, 2018.

‘Black Lightning’ was created by writer Tony Isabella with artist Trevor Von Eeden, first appearing in ‘Black Lightning #1′ (April 1977) during the Bronze Age of Comic Books. While his origin story has been told several times, his current origin story states that he was born in the DC Universe as a meta-human with superhuman abilities.

Black Lightning is DC Comics’ second African-American superhero and the first black DC Comics hero to lead his own TV series played by Cress Williams as the titular character alongside China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams, Christine Adams, Marvin Jones III, Damon Gupton, and James Remar.

The show’s focus on a stronger narrative and the grittier grounded approach makes it a more relatable and a realistic tv show like ‘Arrow‘. Its main strength lies in the message it’s trying to convey regarding equal rights and privileges for the African-American community. It further delves into the realistic consequences of gang violence, corrupt law enforcement, and racism. Considering that we have seen Marvel’s own Luke Cage do this on the Netflix series, message-wise this superhero is not offering anything novel. However, if we put the Marvel versus DC argument aside for a moment and look at the bigger picture of the mainstream representation of black people in the media, especially as superheroes, it indeed speaks a message of inclusiveness. Naturally, this has drawn fans to the show, and critics have also praised it saying, “Black Lightning doesn’t reinvent superhero TV, but it does give the genre a necessary jolt with real-world plots, scary new villains, and a star-making performance from Cress Williams”.

Black Lightning Cast: Who is in it?

‘Black Lightning’ was renewed for a second season at the CW network and came back stronger than ever. Most of the main characters in the series returned for the sophomore season. This includes Cress Williams as Jefferson who is joined by China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams, Marvin “Krondon” Jones III, Christine Adams, Damon Gupton, and James Remar. Jordan Calloway joined the main cast after being promoted from a recurring cast member from the previous season.

As for the upcoming season, not much is known about the introduction of newer characters from the DC lore but the original cast would return again once it is renewed.

Black Lightning Plot: What is it about?

The first season focused on Black Lightning returning from his retirement and fighting the One Hundred and the season’s main antagonists, the ASA and Tobias Whale. Black Lightning is a monumental achievement for the DC universe and the crown jewel of the current DC TV shows including ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash‘, ‘Legends of Tomorrow‘ & ‘Supergirl‘.

With Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones) now in possession of Proctor’s briefcase with a glowing green object that allows him to become the king of Freeland, Black Lightning comes face to face with the man responsible for his father’s death again in season 2. In a recent interview, Salim Akil had explained his decision to keep Tobias at large and in charge and give him a seat at the table in the next series.

Viewers also find out about the mysterious contents of the briefcase Tobias procured from the proctor. According to the showrunner, Salim Akil, one reason he wanted Tobias to be brought back is that the audiences loved him. Akil also said that Tobias is a really good villain, and he loves Marvin Jones.

Towards the end of season 2, Khalil suffers a wound during his fight with Cutter and his health begins to deteriorate. He goes into hiding with Jennifer. Giselle Cutter is identified as a low-level telekinetic metahuman. Cutter goes in search of Khalil and finds him in the barn. Jennifer takes over her and forces the antidote out of her. Black Lightning and Thunder arrive at the barn but Khali and Jen have left. We won’t spoil the show further for those who haven’t seen it yet.

The official synopsis of the upcoming season reads,

“Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man with many faces. He is a former Olympic athlete, respected educator and a father of two. He is also Black Lightning, superpowered protector of the fictional city of Freeland with the ability to sense and harness electricity. Jefferson is not the only one with powers and multiple faces. His oldest daughter, Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams) is a medical student, health clinic volunteer, and dedicated social activist. She is also the superhero known as Thunder who possesses the ability to drastically increase her density, giving her invulnerability and super strength for as long as she can hold her breath.

Finally, Jefferson’s youngest daughter, Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain), is a fiery teen who inherited her father’s athletic gifts but not his desire to be an athlete. Jennifer also inherited superpowers. Her body generates pure electrical energy and she possesses the potential to be more powerful than Anissa or Jefferson and is known as Lightning.

Lynn Stewart (Christine Adams) is Jefferson’s ex-wife but they are still very much in love in addition to sharing the load as co-parents. She’s also an expert in metahuman medicine. Together, the Pierce family faces the challenges of a declined urban community, including a menacing gang that calls itself The 100 and infamous gangster, Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III). Worse, Freeland has been plagued by government-sponsored experiments and drug trafficking that have created metahumans and addicts while making Freeland a target of a dangerous foreign power, Markovia.

Fortunately, the family has allies in their fight, Jefferson’s surrogate father and a former covert superspy, Peter Gambi (James Remar), as well as Jefferson’s friend and neighbor, the committed and scrupulously honest Deputy Police Chief Henderson (Damon Gupton).”

It appears like things are about to get heated up in the upcoming season.
