Robert Allen Zimmerman, popularly known as Bob Dylan, was born on May 24th, 1941 in Minnesota. Bob Dylan has been a dominant part of the music scene for more than half a century now. Initially, his songs were welcomed by the people because it touched upon the proponents of civil rights. In a successful career spanning well over fifty years, Bob Dylan released 37 albums of which 13 of them occupied the top slot on the Billboard charts. His list of achievements goes on to boast about his covetable awards, 11 Grammys, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and numerous musical Hall of Fames. In 2012, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “Time” magazine called him one of the “Most Important People of the Century”.

Bob Dylan’s songs that are popular even today and timeless are: Tangled Up in Blue, Hurricane, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, Blowin’ in the Wind, Ballad of a Thin Man, Visions of Johanna, A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall, Simple Twist of Fate, Jokerman, etc. Many of his songs became anthems for the U.S Civil Rights and movements that were anti war. He got positive critical reviews for his performance in 1961, after which he agreed to sign the contract with Columbia Records.

He was trying out new genres and styles which did not go down too well with his already existing fans who expected him not to change his style. After declaring himself a born again Christian in 1979, he was inspired to release his latest song, Slow Train. This was also the song that got him his first Grammy.

He is also famous for being the only person to have been awareded the Kennedy Center Honors. He also featured on Time’s 100 as a “master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation”.
