‘Shazam!’ Spell Continues at the Box Office With $53 Million Opening

DC’s superhero vehicle ‘Shazam!‘ surges to an impressive $20.5 million at the Friday box office. The Friday boost pushed the projected domestic debut of the movie to $54 Million. According to THR, the movie had already collected $3.3 million in sneaks. ‘Shazam!’ enjoys a good time in the overseas markets too.

‘Shazam!’ occupied the top slot with the estimated $54 Million from 4,217 North American locations in its debut week. The superhero flick earned $20.5 Million domestically on Friday along with $29.2 Million globally. The movie kicked off with a $44 Million through Friday outside the U.S., which includes a promising opening day collection of $15.3 Million from the Chinese market. The movie also got an overwhelming reception from exhibitors at CinemaCon.

Asher Angel plays the young boy, Billy Batson who transforms into an adult superhero, played by Zachary Levi, in ‘Shazam!’ Whenever he says the spell ‘Shazam’ the boy transforms into the superhero. The David F. Sandberg directorial has received an A CinemaScore and a 91% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. ‘Shazam!’ is written by Henry Gayden. The movie also has Mark Strong, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou playing key roles.

With ‘Shazam!’ catching the top spot in the weekend box office, Warner Bros. gets a definitive edge in the upcoming race. The steady sailing of ‘Shazam!’ is crucial for the studio which has an exciting lineup waiting for release. DC movies ‘Birds of Prey,’ ‘The Joker’ and ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ hit theaters back-to-back.

Paramount’s remake of ‘Pet Sematary‘ finishes second with an estimated haul of $24 Million from 3,585 domestic sites. The horror flick earned around $10 Million on Friday alone. The Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer directorial is an adaptation of Stephen King’s most popular and scary novel of the same name.

‘Pet Cemetery’ stars John Lithgow, Jason Clarke and Amy Steinmetz in lead roles. The horror movie has a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and a C+ CinemaScore. The R-rated horror flick centres on a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the Maine woods where Jason Clarke’s Dr. Louis Creed and his family settle down.

Tim Burton’s live-action adaptation of Disney’s ‘Dumbo‘ falls to the third slot in the weekend box office. This week ‘Dumbo’ earns an estimated $18.2 Million, which adds its box office haul $76.2 Million in total. Though the movie started off well in the last week with a top slot, the numbers plunged down this week. The collection charts of the movie is not promising compared to other live-action flicks from Disney.

Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ is in fourth place. The movie collects an estimated $14.1 Million this week, bringing its total to $152.7 million. ‘Us’ also pushes ‘Captain Marvel’ to a fifth slot, which earns an estimated $12.9 Million this week. ‘Captain Marvel’ has already collected more than $1 billion worldwide including the domestic box office share of $374.3 Million.

Paramount’s animated feature ‘Wonder Park‘ is in the ninth place with an estimated figure of $2.2 million in this weekend. The movie has collected a $42.4 Million so far. ‘How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World‘ ends the week with $2 million, and $156.7 Million total.

The dark horse of the weekend box office is ‘Unplanned,’ which was released in theaters on March 29. The anti-abortion propaganda film has drawn in more than $8.6 Million . The unexpected box office momentum helped the movie to catch the fifth slot for the week, finishing just behind the biggies like ‘Dumbo,’ ‘Us’ and ‘Captain Marvel.’
