Castlevania Season 3: Premiere Date, Cast, Recap, Update

‘Castlevania’ is an American adult animated web television series, inspired by the Konami’s video game ‘Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse’ and ‘Castlevania: Curse of Darkness’. The series was originally planned as a film by producer Kevin Kolde and his company Project 51, with the art style of the series heavily influenced by that of Japanese anime and Ayami Kojima’s artwork in ‘Castlevania: Symphony of the Night’; which is about a grief-stricken Dracula, who takes revenge against humanity for the death of his wife.

The show airs on Netflix and first premiered on July 7, 2017. It has been developed for the streaming platform by Kevin Kolde, Warren Ellis, Adi Shankar. Ellis has also written the script for the show. The series shows a vampire hunter team up with others to try and defend a country that is overrun with otherworldly creatures that are controlled by Count Dracula himself.

If you have played the games, then you will love the series, and the allure of the game was enough to earn this show quite a large fanbase. Of course, when the show actually took off, a lot of people who had never played the game also began to watch the show due to its rich content and fine execution, not to mention the way it expertly interweaves various genres like drama, action, horror, adventure, and dark fantasy. The critics also gave ‘Castlevania’ favorable reviews, praising it for its strong focus on the narrative and visuals. They also praised how well the game had been adapted to a show, and in fact, in the history of Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Castlevania’ is the first video game adaptation to be rated as ‘Fresh’, which is a positive thing for the show.

Castlevania Cast: Who is in it?

The main voice cast of ‘Castlevania’ consists of Richard Armitage of ‘The Hobbit‘ fame. He voices the character of Trevor Belmont, who happens to be the last member alive of the Belmont clan, a family of monster hunters who was previously excommunicated. James Callis plays the role of ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary‘ appears as Adrian Alucard Tepes, the dhampir son of Dracula, who seeks to protect humanity from his father.

For those unaware, a dhampir is a creature, according to Balkan folklore, that is born as a result of a union between a vampire and a human. The human, in this case, is Lisa Tepes, played by Emily Swallow. She is Dracula’s beloved wife, and when she is burnt at the stake after being falsely accused of being a witch, it drives Dracula over the edge. Graham McTavish who appears as the Saint of Killers in ‘Preacher‘ and recently appeared in Netflix’s ‘Lucifer‘ plays the role of Vlad Dracula Tepes or Count Dracula himself. Alejandra Reynoso appears as Sypha Belnades, a powerful magic wielder, Tony Amendola appears as The Elder, and Sypha’s grandfather.

Matt Frewer of ‘Orphan Black’ fame appears as the Bishop. He is the clergyman who upsets the scales by ordering Lisa’s burning. Theo James appears as Hector, a devil forgemaster, whom Dracula summons to help him wage war against humanity. Adetokumboh M’Cormack appears as Isaac, a loyalist to Dracula and one who helps him lead his armies. Jaime Murray of ‘Dexter’ and ‘Ringer’ fame appears as Carmilla. She is a member of Dracula’s war council but is also a scheming vampire mistress with plans to usurp him. Peter Stormare plays Godbrand, a Viking vampire warlord who Dracula summons to help him in this revenge-fuelled war.

Hopefully, all of the main characters will return in the upcoming season, both the good guys and the baddies. We might also see some new characters being thrown into the mix as the world of ‘Castlevania’ and the that of monsters is equally expansive, and new additions would pump some fresh blood into the show, which is always welcome, and not just because this is a show about vampires!

Castlevania Plot: What is it about?

The main plot of ‘Castlevania’ starts off with Dracula’s wife being falsely accused of being a witch and being burned at the stake as a result. Overcome by grief at losing his beloved, Count Dracula’s sadness soon turns into rage, and he declares that all the people of Wallachia in Romania, will pay for this transgression with their lives. True to his word, he summons an army of demons and they end up overrunning the country. As a result, all people begin to live lives of fear and distrust, literally ruled by monsters. However, humanity never gives up without a fight, and the same case applies here. Trevor Belmont, the outcast monster hunter, takes up arms against Dracula and his army. While one man might not seem enough, he has help from other powerful sources, including Sypha Belnades, a formidable magician, and Dracula’s own son, Alucard, who decides to take a stand against his father and protect humanity from the horrors that Dracula has exposed them to.

As far as adaptations go, the show is brilliant. It also does a good job at humanizing Dracula, showing him to be grief-stricken and fueled by revenge into committing evil acts, rather than just doing it as a comic villain. However, they also portray the Church as a rather comically villainous entity when it burns Dracula’s wife for no good reason, and then actively impedes the attempts of others to stop Dracula. There is no good reason for this, except for some misplaces notion of trying to control the masses. The show fluctuates in this manner in the plot as well. However, this much can be said, that the visuals are stunning, and the bloodbaths and violence that we see all have a very sleek and stylish feel to it. Despite having some cliches, this is a series which is ripe with potential.

Hopefully, in the upcoming season, we will see the show give more depth to the stories of the characters, and the plot will hopefully be as filled with action and adventure as it has been up until this point.
