Dark Cast: Who’s in It?

Mainly, ‘Dark’ follows the stories of four families. Each family comes with its own set of ancestors, who become the subject of another plotline. The branching out in time and space leads the show to employ the talents of a wide cast. Following are the major characters, and the actors who play them:

One of the leads of the show is Jonas Kahnwald. He is a troubled teenager who is handling grief along with the other emotional disturbances that come with the hassle of being a teenager. The character is portrayed by Louis Hofmann. This young actor is known for his roles in the German film, ‘Tom Sawyer’, and the Danish film, ‘Land of Mine’. He has also appeared in ‘The White Crow’, ‘Alone in Berlin’, ‘Sanctuary’, and had a recurring role in Amazon Studios’ ‘You Are Wanted’.

Sebastian Rudolph plays the role of Jonas’ father, Michael. Rudolph is known for his roles in various films and TV series like ‘Happy Holiday’, ‘The English Patient’, ‘Stalingrad’, ‘Death of a Carrier Pigeon’ and ‘Four Kings’. The other version of the character is played by Dan Lennard Liebrenz.

Lisa Vicari plays the role of Martha Nielsen. Her other appearances include names like ‘Luna’, ‘One Time Please’, ‘The Boss’, ‘Doctor Game’ and ‘One Like Bruno’. Moritz Jahn plays the role of her brother, Magnus. He is best known for his main role in a German children’s show and appeared in a couple of other films and TV shows before nabbing a role in ‘Dark’. Oliver Masucci plays the role of their father, Ulrich, who is a police officer and investigates the strange disappearances across town. Masucci is known for his role in films like ‘Look Who’s Back’, ‘Tatort’, ‘Four Blocks’ and ‘Never Look Away’. Ludger Bökelmann plays another version of Ulrich. Jördis Triebel plays the role of Katherina, Ulrich’s wife, who is the high-school principal.

Franziska Doppler is another teenager who becomes involved in the mystery surrounding her town. She is played by Gina Stiebitz. Stephen Kampwirth (‘Der Kriminalist’, ‘Who Am I’, ‘Wolfsburg’, ‘Beyond Silence’, ‘23’) plays the role of her father, Peter Doppler, who also serves as Jonas’ psychologist. Karoline Eichhorn (‘Der Kriminalist’, ‘In the Shadows’, ‘The Silence’) plays the role of his wife, Charlotte Doppler, who serves as the chief of police in Winden. Stephanie Amarell plays her younger version.

Bartosz Tiedemann, Jonas’ best friend and his rival in love, is played by Paul Lux. He is known for his roles in ‘The Survey of the World’ and ‘Babylon Berlin’. Peter Benedict plays the role of his father, Aleksander, who is the current director of the nuclear plant. Béla Gabor Lenz plays his younger version.

Apart from the members of these families, there are characters like the Stranger (Andreas Pietschmann), Girl from the Future (Lea van Acken), other classmates of the children, and the co-workers of the parents.

Dark Plot: What’s It About?

The story of ‘Dark’ is set in a small town called Winden. At first, it might seem like just another sleepy, unexceptional town, but once you get an insight into the lives of the families that call this place home, your perception will change considerably. Four families- Kahnwald, Nielsen, Doppler and Tiedemann- become the focal points for the plot. It begins with the suicide of a man named Michael Kahnwald. This severely affects the psyche of his son, who is sent to a psychiatric facility to help him recover.

The story picks up months later as Jonas readies himself to go back to his normal life. However, he is still in the process of coming to terms with his loss. Then there is Martha Nielsen’s family. She is the girl who Jonas likes, which becomes the subplot for the show. Her family, too, faced tragedy some time ago when her father’s younger brother, Mads, disappeared in 1986. Bartosz Tiedemann is Jonas’ best friend, but things have been a bit awkward between them because Bartosz is currently dating Martha. The Tiedemann family are a big deal in town because Bartosz’s father is the current director of the nuclear plant in the town. Before him, his wife’s mother had been the owner of that position. The Doppler family, too, has a connection with the strange things going on in the town.

What unravels their secrets and brings the troubled nature of relationships between them to light is the disappearance of children. What makes this trickier is the revelation that the present isn’t the first time to witness something like this. People have disappeared in the past as well, and in an eerily similar way as they are disappearing now. Whenever a lead is discovered, something that might lead to the solving of the case, it turns out to be a key that opens to the lock to yet another mystery. Soon, the major players in the story realise that to understand this puzzle, they’ll have to collect all its pieces.

The problem is that these pieces are scattered throughout time, and they’ll have to cross that barrier if they want to have some answers. A wormhole in a strange cave gives them access to the travel back to 1986 and 1953. This brings them face to face with the secrets of their ancestors. To figure out a way to solve all the mess in the present, they might have to become privy to the things that they might not like.

The wait has been long for the fans but we are almost there. ‘Dark’ season 2 release date is set as June 21, 2019.
