Deadman Wonderland Season 2: Premiere Date, Characters, Plot

Deadman Wonderland (also known as Deddoman Wandārando in Japanese) is a Japanese thriller anime television series which is based on a manga of the same name. Written by Kazuma Kondou and illustrated by Jinsei Kataoka, the manga was first published on April 26, 2007, and saw its last volume being published on July 26, 2013. It was quite popular, and hence was picked up for an anime television series. Season 1 of Deadman Wonderland premiered on April 17, 2011, and although years have passed, fans are still waiting to hear about a second season. Here’s everything we know about the prospects of Season 2 thus far.

Deadman Wonderland Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?

Deadman Wonderland season 1 premiered on April 17, 2011, and although nearly a decade has passed since then, there seems to be no news of a second season yet.

This is surprising, considering the fact that the show only covers the first 14 chapters of the 50+ chapter manga, and there’s plenty of source material left to make several more seasons. Yet, as it stands, there seems to be no hint of a new season. This is particularly discouraging since anime shows typically have a time period of one to five years within which they are renewed. Considering the fact that nearly double that time has passed since Season 1, it’s quite likely that the show might not see a second season. Our best guess is that in the unlikely scenario of the anime getting renewed, Deadman Wonderland season 2 release date could be sometime in 2021. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.

Deadman Wonderland Plot:

Deadman Wonderland is set in Japan and the events take place 10 years after a catastrophic earthquake sinks three quarters of Tokyo into the Pacific Ocean. With Tokyo almost completely destroyed, a prison called Deadman Wonderland comes up in the city, and starts accepting prisoners from all around the country. Privately-run, Deadman Wonderland functions as a prison cum theme park, and forces its inmates to partake in various activities and games for the enjoyment of tourists, who pay hefty sums of money to watch the prisoners.

In this backdrop, the show follows Ganta Igarashi, a seemingly normal student who studies in middle school. Having escaped the earthquake when he was very young, Ganta does not have any memory of the incident and lives a normal, content life. However, Ganta’s life is turned upside down when a man in red armour, referred to as the “Red Man”, enters his classroom and slaughters all his classmates. However, instead of killing Ganta too, the Red Man knocks him unconscious, embeds a crystal in him, and disappears. When Ganta comes around, he is taken into custody, being the sole survivor and the prime suspect behind the murders of his classmates. Despite pleading innocence, Ganta is proclaimed guilty by a kangaroo court and imprisoned in the horrific Deadman Wonderland facility.

When the youngster arrives at the facility, he is fitted with a special collar that serves as a life monitor, stunner, and locator for inmates at the facility. Being on death row, a lethal poison is constantly injected through Ganta’s collar, and the only way Ganta can stay alive is by consuming a peculiar candy-like medicine which is available in the prison. However, getting this medicine is far from easy, and the process to get the medicine is gamified – in order to keep himself alive, Ganta has to partake in various activities like entertaining tourists, working backstage etc. so that he can gain Cast Points, which is the unique currency in the prison. These Cast Points can be used for a variety of things, from buying common items or luxurious items, to buying the required medicine, to even reducing prison sentences.

As Ganta struggles to get used to the ruthless and cruel world inside Deadman Wonderland, he is aided by a mysterious albino girl called Shiro. Interestingly however, while Shiro aids Ganta, her existence is unknown to others inside the prison. With time, Ganta eventually gets used to his new lifestyle, and sets his sights on uncovering the identity of the Red Man and clearing his name. This hardly proves to be easy, and things get complicated when a bizarre twist of fate befalls Ganta. In an explicable development, Ganta gains the ability to manipulate his own blood, and can even turn it into a weapon. While Ganta struggles to understand what is going on with him, he later comes to know that he has turned into a “Deadman”, who are isolated prisoners in Deadman Wonderland who possess something called the “Branches of Sin”, which is the ability to manipulate and weaponize their own blood.

When the prison authorities find out about Ganta being a “Deadman”, he is forced to participate in barbaric gladiatorial deathmatches called Carnival Corpse, which anonymous guests come to watch for huge sums of money. Forced to confront this new reality, Ganta has to learn to survive these death matches, and over time, befriends some of his former opponents, who are also Deadmen. Together with the help of his fellow Deadmen, Ganta thus continues his search for the true identity of the Red Man, and tries to uncover what other dark secrets lurk inside the prison.

Deadman Wonderland Characters:

Despite having dozens of characters, the two main characters in the show are Ganta Igarashi and Shiro. Below, we’ve given you a brief background on each of them, along with a brief background of the main antagonist of the show.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

Ganta Igarashi: The 14-year-old main protagonist of the show, Ganta’s seemingly normal life gets upended when he convicted for the slaughter of his entire class in middle school. Although Ganta is sentenced to “death”, he has to live out his sentence in the brutal world of Deadman Wonderland. While at the prison, Ganta learns that the mysterious Red Man, who is the actual culprit behind the slaughter of his classmates, is also housed in the prison, and he sets his sights on uncovering his identity, obtaining a confession, and clearing his own name. At the same time, Ganta also develops the ability to manipulate and weaponize his own blood, and gets classified as a Deadman. Ganta’s particular power as a Deadman allows him to concentrate variable quantities of blood on his palm, which he can then shoot at high speed, using them as bullets. Forced to fight in the prison’s gladiatorial deathmatches, Ganta starts participating in Carnival Corpse under the moniker Woodpecker, and gains some allies in the process. Later, Ganta helps some of the inmates escape Deadman Wonderland, but he stays behind to continue his pursuit of the Red Man. Even later, Ganta’s powers develop into something even more devastating, but he starts to lose control of his powers.

Shiro: Ganta’s mysterious helper inside Deadman Wonderland, Shiro is the second main protagonist of the show. An albino, Shiro wears a skin-tight suit that masks her scarred skin, and she is easy distinguishable from the other inmates owing to her odd mannerisms. Shiro claims that she knows Ganta from childhood, but owing to Ganta’s faulty memory, he can’t remember her. Having spent almost her entire life in Deadman Wonderland, Shiro has intimate knowledge of the prison and also has mysterious, inhuman physical abilities. Strangely, however, none of the other inmates appear to know about Shiro’s existence, and later it is revealed that she harbours a sinister secret.

Rinichirou Hagire: The main antagonist of the show and the creator of Deadman Wonderland, Rinichirou Hagire’s sinister schemes are not revealed for a very long time. Being bedridden and trapped in an old man’s body, Rinichirou does not take part in the day-to-day management of the prison, which he delegates to others. However, as the show progresses, he reveals his terrifying true form, which we will not spoil for you.
