Everyone’s favorite serial killer, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is the eponymous protagonist of Showtime’s crime thriller drama, ‘Dexter’. A vigilante killer by night and a forensic technician specializing in bloodstain pattern analysis by day, Dexter embarks on a killing spree in the darkness — in order to end murderers who have escaped justice.
After its premiere in 2006, the series has aired eight seasons to date, and in this span, managed to garner a slew of awards, including Golden Globes and Emmys. In fact, the first four seasons received universal acclaim but the ratings started to drop from the fifth season onward.
The eighth season of ‘Dexter’ debuted in June 2013 and its premiere proved to be the most-watched ‘Dexter’ episode. Even its finale attracted around 2.8 million viewers. Now, since season 8’s conclusion, fans still want to know if there will be a ‘Dexter’ season 9. Well, we are here to answer just that. Read on!
Dexter Season 9 Release Date: Cancelled or Renewed?
‘Dexter’ season 8 released on June 30, 2013, on CBS-owned Showtime. After airing for 12 episodes, it concluded on September 22, 2013. However, before the premiere of the eighth installment, Showtime announced that season 8 would be the final season for the series. The announcement was made by the then CBS Corporation president Les Moonves.
Originally, the show had been planned to last for seven seasons but Showtime president David Nevin pushed the producers to delay the series by another year, thereby, moving the finale to season 8 instead of season 7. This decision was further confirmed by EP Sara Colleton as well.
In 2018, five years after the season 8 finale, a poster was making the rounds, pointing toward a ninth season. But later, the news was confirmed to be fake. According to this poster, ‘Dexter’ season 9 would be co-produced by Netflix and Showtime.
So, yes, as of now, ‘Dexter’ season 9 stands cancelled. But don’t lose your hopes. Here’s why. Star Michael C. Hall stated during an interview with Variety that the series might make a return. He said: “When Dexter ended, I wanted to mix it up and felt like the cumulative effect of the things I have done since has served as a sort of Dexorcism.” He further added: “It’s a possibility given how the show ended that we could revisit Dexter. I have just yet to, for my part, imagine or hear someone else’s idea that makes it feel worth doing. But never say never.”
It seems from his interview that Hall wants to wait for sometime before he again reprises his titular character. But what can happen if a reboot is actually commissioned? We do know that in the final episode, Dexter fakes his death and his sister Debra sadly passes away. He is still in hiding and so, how can he carry out his crimes while being concealed from plain view?
