How did Don King earn his money and wealth?
Donald King is a famous American boxing producer who is responsible for fixing some of the biggest fights in history. Born on August 20, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, King has been in controversy all of his life, including two separate murder charges. His entry to the boxing world was with Muhammad Ali, where he convinced Ali to box for charity, for a local hospital in Cleveland. He also befriended Don Elbaum, a local promoter, who already had a boxing career.
After beating many other promoters in 1974, he became successful and promoted a heavyweight championship fight, popularly called “The Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire and managed to secure a record $10 million purse. The fight was won by Ali by a knockout in the ninth round. He also organized the third fight between Ali and Joe Frazier, which he named as “Thrilla in Manila”, which encouraged his position in the boxing world. He was also responsible for organizing some of the most prominent fights of the 1970s.
Throughout the decade, King added an impressive number of important fighters to his roaster and of some those also the holders of the Hall of Fame credentials. His promotional banner was called “Don King Productions” and some of the big names under it were Larry Holmes, Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Salvador Sanchez, Wilfredo Gomez and, Alexis Arguello.
During the next two decades, some of the biggest stars of the boxing industry chose King to represent them in their big fights. Mike Tyson, Julio César Chávez, Bernard Hopkins, Ricardo Lopez, Felix Trinidad, Andrew Gołota, Marco Antonio Barrera and, Ricardo Mayorga are some those famous boxers. In 2008 King was inducted into the “Gaming Hall of Fame”.
Aside from boxing career, he also tried his hands in other avenues. In 1984 he managed Michael Jacksons “Victory Tour”. He also owns a Cleveland-based weekly newspaper called “Call and Post”, which serves to the African-American community in Ohio. King has one daughter named Debbie, and two adopted sons Carl and Eric. He also has five grandchildren. King has also been outspoken with his politics, often making controversial statements. He supported George W. Bush and Obama in their political campaigns.
