Fat Joe, real name Joseph Antonio Cartagena, was born on 19 August 1970 in New York, US and was raised by parents of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. Fat Joe lived in a public housing and to support his family, he started stealing at a very early age.
Fat Joe is not only an American rapper but is also an actor and entrepreneur. He was introduced to hip-hop by his brother. He is known to be the Chief Executive Officer of ‘Terror Squad Entertainment’ currently and is also known for being a part the musical groups ‘Terror Squad’ and ‘Diggin’ in the Crates Crew’ (D.I.T.C).
Fat Joe started his music career as a member of the D.I.T.C under the Relativity Records and then started a solo artist career by establishing his own record label ‘Terror Squad’ where he also signed famous music artists such as Remy Ma, Tony Sunshine, Big Pun, Armageddon, Cuban Link, Prospect, DJ Khaled, Triple Seis and discover producers Cool & Dre.
Fat Joe released his debut album titled ‘Represent’ in the year 1993 and the single ‘Flow Joe’ which peaked at number 1 position in the Billboard Hot Rap Singles. He later signed a deal with famous Atlantic Records which was valid from 1998 to 2006. Apart from ‘Represent,’ the other studio albums released by Fat Joe are ‘Jealous One’s Envy,’ ‘Don Cartagena,’ Jealous Ones Still Envy,’ ‘Loyalty’ ‘All or Nothing,’ ‘Me, Myself & I,’ ‘The Elephant in the Room,’ ‘J.O.S.E. 2’ and ‘The Darkside Vol 1.’
The album ‘Jealous Ones Still Envy’ is known to be Fat Joe’s most commercially successful album till date and was certified platinum by the RIAA and certified silver by the BPI internationally. He is known for his famous songs ‘Lean Back’ which is a duet with Terror Squad and Remmy Ma. The song went on to rank 1 in the summer of 2004. Fat Joe has featured in a remix to the song ‘Welcome to My Hood’ by DJ Khaled which also features other popular music artists such as T-Pain, Ludacris, Twista, Mavado, Busta Rhymes, Birdman, Game, Ace Hood, Bun B, Jadakiss and Waka Flocka Flame. His other famous singles include ‘Whats Luv?’ which features Ashanti & Ja Rule, ‘Make It Rain’ which features Lil Wayne and ‘All the Way Up’ which features French Montana and Dre.
