‘Fosse/Verdon’ is an American biographical miniseries that airs on FX. The show is based on the book ‘Fosse’ by Sam Wesson. Steven Levenson, famous for ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ is the acting showrunner. With Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions acting as the production companies, ‘Fosse/Verdon’ has Thomas Kail, Steven Levenson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sam Rockwell, Michelle Williams, George Stelzner, and Joel Fields as its executive producer. Erica Kay is the producer of the show.

The show mostly focuses on the personal problems that Fosse and Verdon faced in their relationship. It also takes a look at how this troubled personal relationship inevitable spilled over and had an effect on their professional work as well. Viewers might want to check out ‘All That Jazz’, the 1979 semi-autobiographical movie by Fosse, to get a better idea of the man, as a companion piece to the show.

Fosse/Verdon Cast: Who is in it?

‘Fosse/Verdon’ not only be a looks at the troubled romantic life and creative partnership between Fosse and Verdon but also explores how Broadway and the big names in theater were at the time of this influential choreographer-dancer duo. The main cast includes Sam Rockwell, of ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri‘ fame and Michelle Williams of ‘Manchester by the Sea‘ fame. They play the roles of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon respectively. For those unaware, Fosse was an American dancer and considered to be an extraordinary musical theater choreographer.

Gwyneth Evelyn “Gwen” Verdon was an American dancer, most identified for her collaboration with Fosse. But even apart from that, Verdon’s talent itself set her apart as one of the most gifted performers to have graced Broadway. Other members of the main cast include Margaret Qualley as Ann Reinking, a famous Broadway dancer known for her extensive experience and works like ‘Coco’ and ‘Chicago’. Norbert Leo Butz appears as Sidney Aaron ‘Paddy’ Chayefsky, the renowned playwright and scriptwriter who holds the distinct honor of having won three solo Academy Awards for Best Screenplay. One of his best works includes ‘Network’. Other cast members include Nate Corddry who plays renowned American screenwriter and novelist Neil Simon, and Kelli Barrett who plays American actress and singer Liza Minnelli.

Fosse/Verdon Plot: What is it about?

‘Fosse/Verdon’ has an intricate and expansive plot that has best been described by The Hollywood Reporter, “the project tells the story of the romantic and creative partnership between Bob Fosse (Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Williams). He was a filmmaker and one of theater’s most influential choreographers and directors; she was the greatest Broadway dancer of all time. Together, they changed the face of American entertainment — at a perilous cost.

The series features Fosse’s choreography and explore the hidden corners of showbiz, the price of pursuing greatness and the suffering inflicted in the name of art”. The show, in its attempt to pay the greatest attention to details, has Nicole Fosse, actress, dancer and producer, and the daughter of Fosse and Verdon, as the co-executive producer. She is also going to be the overseer of the Fosse Verdon legacy. She spoke about the show, saying, “My mother and father have one of the greatest love stories ever known. They were extremely complex people with an indestructible bond, loyalty, and trust that endured both fantasy and reality. Finally, we have a creative team with the talent and wisdom to tell the story.”

For those unfamiliar with the legendary status that Fosse and Verdon hold in their fields, should know that Robert Louis Fosse has won eight Tony Awards for choreography which is more than anyone else and has even bagged one for direction. Fosse also won a Tony, Oscar and an Emmy in a single year. He is best known for creating the style called ‘Fosse Amoeba’, which involves a sideways shuffle, turned in knees and most importantly, the jazz hands that became immortalized. Verdon too is the winner of four Tony Awards and was a critically acclaimed dancer on Broadway.

Despite their respective geniuses, it was the chemistry between the two that remains a tale for the ages. It is said that genius seeks out genius, and Fosse soon found his favorite collaborator, muse and lover, all in Verdon. However, their fiercely artistic sensibilities might have had a tough time reconciling to the inevitable domesticating effect that relationships seem to have. Fosse for his part had a string of affairs which strained his marriage with Verdon. While this was Verdon’s second marriage, she simply could not stand the infidelities on Fosse’s part. As a result, the two separated, but they never got divorced. However, their marriage led to the birth of Nicole, who as we mentioned is heavily involved in the making of the show to ensure that her parents’ stories and legacies are not misrepresented.

Bert Salke, the head of Fox 21, had this to say about the show, “Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon’s story is one of a fascinating, passionate love affair that gave birth to some truly remarkable cultural achievements, and to this day it has been largely untold. In the capable hands of Steven, Tommy, and Lin, with the vital creative input and imprimatur of their only daughter Nicole, this series is going to be a compelling look at these two icons as portrayed by the enormously talented Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams. We’re very excited”.

While Fosse is largely considered to be a genius in his own right, who ignited a revolution in dance, film, and theater, it is often ignored that Verdon played a large and undeniable role in molding his style. Rather than enforcing the much-articulated myth of Fosse being a visionary artist working in solitude, the show seeks to explore how the relationship with Verdon influenced Fosses’ views and approach to his art.
