How did Fredro Starr earn his money and wealth?

Fred Lee Scruggs Jr. is an American hardcore rapper who took birth on April 18, 1971, at the Kings County Hospital Center. He spent his early life in Flatbush, Brooklyn and when he was 13, years of age, in 1983, he and his brother David Scruggs moved to South Jamaica, Queens. He studied for four years at the John Adams High School (Queens). The popular school has also had Marlon Fledtcher, Tyrone Taylor, Mr Cheeks and Freaky Tah as students.

He is most popularly known as Fredro Starr and is also a record producer, actor and author. Although being a member of Onyx, the multi-platinum hardcore rap group is most definitive of Fredro Starr. He was first spotted by Jam Master Jay, the hip-hop legend. While Fredro was at Onyx, the group released three top-selling albums for which Fredro Starr received a “Rap/Hip-Hop New Artist” nomination in 1994 at the American Music Awards. He won the “Best Rap Album” at the 1994 Soul Train Music Award.

In his early days, he was inspired by the movie Beat Street that led his interest in breakdancing for which he came to be known as Magic. After he completed his studies, he teamed up with his school buddies Big DS and Suavé and started Onyx. This was in 1988. In 1989, they signed on Jeffrey Harris to be their manager, and this brought them a contract with Profile Records. Their first single Ah, And We Do It Like This” was recorded in 1990, but it wasn’t as successful as they had hoped and recorded dismal sales. They met with Jam Master Jay for the first time in 1991 who gave them an opportunity to present a demo. For unavoidable reasons, Suave and Big DS couldn’t make it, and so, Fredro and Sticky Fingaz made two songs “Stik ‘N’ Muve” and “Exercise” which Jam Master Jay ended up liking. This got them signed to JMJ Records with Sticky now a part of the group because Jay refused to let him go. He said, “If Sticky ain’t in the group, it ain’t no group!”

Onyx was in the news for a while for their feud with 50 Cent which began at the “Survival Of The Illest” concert at the Apollo Theater on July 18, 1998. The rapper Scarred 4 Life (Clay Da Raider) ended up performing 50 Cent’s verse during the concert which led to a confrontation between Starr and 50 Cent at the 2003 Vibe Awards to which Starr said that, “50 Cent basically started shit with me, started a scuffle, and a bodyguard broke us up. He’s a punk. He’s disrespectful to Jam Master Jay ever since he passed.”

Onyx released three albums with JMJ Records, Bacdafucup, All We Got Iz Us and Shut ‘Em Down. “Slam” Bacdafucup earned them a multi-platinum status and went on to be a huge commercial success. Starr has been part of Forest Whitaker’s award-winning Strapped on HBO, Spike Lee’s Clockers, and Sunset Park. Also, he has acted in Ride, Light It Up, Save the Last Dance and Torque. He has appeared on Law & Order, New York Undercover,  The Wire, CSI: Miami, among others. In 2007, Fredro Starr married Croatian model Korina Longin and has two children with her.
