Gary Dwayne Payton is an American former professional basketball player, who is one of the best defenders in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born on July 23, 1968, in Oakland, California, USA and has a nickname – The Glove. Payton is the son of Al and Annie Payton. He has been married to Monique James since 1997 and has four children. He started playing basketball with NBA player Greg Foster during his schooling at Skyline High School. The Oregon State University has acknowledged him as one of the best college basketball players, so he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. In 1990, he completed his graduation, and in 1996 was inducted into OSU’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Gary’s professional career began with the 1990 NBA Draft, where he was selected as the 2nd pick by the Seattle SuperSonics. He stayed with the team for 13 seasons. Initially, in his first two seasons, he struggled a bit, but very soon in the 1990s, together with Shawn Kemp, he formed one of the best tandem partnership in NBA history. Being at the Seattle, Gary’s received numerous awards like consecutive All-Star appearances from 1994 until 1998 and 2000-2003. In 1996, he bagged the Defensive Player of the year award and became the first ever point guard to win the award. He also led his team to the 1996 NBA finals.

In the mid of the 2002-2003 season, Payton was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. He averaged 19.6 points and 7.4 assists per game, becoming the best player for the Bucks. Next, he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers as an unrestricted agent, where he stayed for only one season and was next traded to the Boston Celtics. Though, he was displeased with the trade but still played as the starting point guard for the team. In 2005, Payton signed a contract with the Miami Heat, that increased his net worth by as much as $1.1 million, and in the same season, he won his first NBA title, as the Miami Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks in six games. At the end of the 2006-2007 season, he got retired from his work.

After his retirement also, Payton worked for NBA TV as an analyst. In 2013, he joined Fox Sports 1’s Fox Sports Live, as an analyst. He also appeared in some advertisements and several films, like, “White Men Can’t Jump” (1992), “Eddie” (1996) playing Rumeal Smith, and “Fear Not” (2011) as Senator Todd. In 1996, he founded The Gary Payton Foundation to provide education and sports activities for children. Another source of his wealth is his line of clothing- “Glove Wear”. He has also written a book, named ‘Confidence counts’ which got published in 1999.
