Good Omens Season 1: Premiere Date, Cast, Narrator, Trailer, Update

‘Good Omens’ is a British-American drama series based on the 1990 fantasy novel ‘Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch’ which has been written by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The series is a joint venture between BBC and Amazon. Created for television by Neil Gaiman himself, the show “will follow the demon Crowley, and the angel Aziraphale, who, being accustomed to life on Earth, seek to prevent the coming of the antichrist and with it the final battle between Heaven and Hell”.

Douglas Mackinnon is directing the show, with Frances McDormand of ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ fame, acting as the narrator. Narrativia, The Blank Corporation, BBC Studios, and Amazon Studios are the companies backing the project, while Gaiman also serves as an executive producer, along with Caroline Skinner, Chris Sussman, Rob Wilkins, Rod Brown. The series will air on Amazon Prime on May 31, 2019, before being released weekly on BBC Two.

Good Omens Cast: Who is in it?

The all-star cast of ‘Good Omens’ includes almost a dozen A-list actors who are expected to form an exciting ensemble. And when that happens apart from a Quentin Tarantino movie, it just fills you with great hope! The series is set to feature the following: Jon Hamm, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Nick Offerman, Josie Lawrence, and Anna Maxwell Martin. I’ll just let that sink in. And the good part after all this is that there are more! The cast themselves have been raving about their colleagues and have showered praise on the network’s achievement. Tennant, speaking about the same, said:  “Michael Sheen, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett and directed by Douglas Mackinnon, it’s a dream team and a dream gig. I am very excited that I’ve been asked to be part of this amazing project. Bring on the Apocalypse!”

Tennant, famous for his roles in ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Jessica Jones‘, will be playing the role of Crowley. Sheen, who is known for his roles such as ‘Midnight in Paris’, is going to appear as the fussy angel Aziraphale. Hamm, whose most renowned role has been on ‘Mad Men’, stars as Gabriel, the angel rival to Aziraphale. Anna Maxwell Martin plays the role of Beelzebub. Lawrence plays the role of Agnes Nutter, who supposedly wrote the book on the prophecy that will come to unfurl on the show. McDormand is the voice of God, while Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his roles in ‘Sherlock‘ and ‘Doctor Strange‘, is voicing Satan. Apart from that, there are a host of other characters including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Metatron, and even William Shakespeare. With such a fascinating cast, it is natural to have high hopes from the show.

Good Omens Plot: What is it about?

The main plot of ‘Good Omens’ has been described officially as “A tale of the bungling of Armageddon features an angel, a demon, an 11-year-old Antichrist and a doom-saying witch.” Basically, there is an unlikely team-up between a fussy angel and the demon Crowley, who are unwilling to readjust regarding their life on earth. In order to hold on to what they have, they decide to prevent the second coming or the birth of the Antichrist. Naturally, there are a lot of other forces at play here, including Beelzebub, Satan, Gabriel, and God as well. In this powerplay between heaven and hell, these two try and make their mark, in what promises to be a wildly funny and exciting watch.

The story also follows Adam, the actual antichrist, who is born to a different family, and yet, due to a mixup, the angel-demon team keep an eye on the wrong child, trying to influence him in such a way as to postpone the apocalypse. Adam, on his part, is ignorant of his powers and actualizes what he reads in conspiracy magazines. However, as the plot progresses, he realizes what he truly is, and when he has to make the choice of splitting the world up among his friends, he decides to stop the apocalypse completely. However, this does not happen before the four horsemen of the apocalypse arrive. They are war, who is actually a war correspondent, death, who is a biker, famine, who is a dietician and fast food tycoon, and pollution.

Notably, the Biblical pestilence is shown to be gone after the discovery of penicillin. Notably, this is how the plot of the book unfurls, and Gaiman has promised that some aspects of the show will differ from the original source. However, we can be sure of the teaming up between Crowley and Aziraphale, and their motives behind stopping the second coming will remain the same.

Gaiman is known for his sharp wit in places, and weaving stories effortlessly, not to mention his proclivity for packing meaningful lessons in an extremely fun manner. It remains to be seen if these characteristics are evident in ‘Good Omens’ too, as they are in his other works.
