‘Grace and Frankie’ is an American comedy web television show that airs on Netflix. The series first premiered on May 8, 2015. It has been created by Marta Kauffman, who is best known for having made the iconic sitcom ‘Friends‘, and Howard J. Morris. Okay Goodnight and Skydance Television are the companies backing the project, while Marta Kauffman, Howard J. Morris, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Tate Taylor, Paula Weinstein, Dana Goldberg, David Ellison, Marcy Ross, and Alexa Junge are on board as the executive producers of the show.

‘Grace and Frankie’ is a comedy series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as frenemies who are brought together after their husbands announce that they are in love and plan to get married. It has a large fan following which keeps the show going. Although the series started off on shaky grounds, over the seasons Tomlin and Fonda found their groove, and the show became critically lauded for the kind of sublime humor it delivered, and the number of award nominations it received, including Emmys and Golden Globes, is a testament to its quality.

Grace and Frankie Cast: Who is in it?

The main cast of ‘Grace and Frankie’ includes Jane Fonda as Grace Hanson who plays the part of a retired cosmetics mogul, Lily Tomlin as Frances “Frankie” Bergstein who appears as a hippie art teacher, Martin Sheen as Robert Hanson who plays Grace’s former husband, and a successful divorce lawyer who later marries Frances’ former husband, Sam Waterston as Sol Bergstein who is Frances’ former husband and also a successful divorce lawyer, who ends up marrying Robert Hanson, June Diane Raphael as Brianna Hanson, Baron Vaughn as Nwabudike Bergstein, Brooklyn Decker as Mallory Hanson, and Ethan Embry as Coyote Bergstein. While these are the main characters, their presence has often been enriched by guest stars who have included the likes of RuPaul, from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’.

In the upcoming season, there is a good chance of Jacob returning. For those unaware, Jacob was Frankie’s serious love interest after her split with husband Sol. Their chemistry was electrifying and although the relationship did not work out, it will be fun to see how things change once Jacob is back in the scene. The role was and will be played by Ernie Hudson. A new character is also set to be introduced, and will most likely be the friend of Grace and Frankie. Details about the role are unclear as of yet, but the part will be played by Mary Steenburgen, who is famous for her appearance in the 2018 movie, ‘Book Club’. Alongside these cast members, there is a good chance that Dolly Parton, the country music legend, will be appearing as a guest star in the upcoming season.

Grace and Frankie Plot: What is it about?

The plot of ‘Grace and Frankie’ follows two women who started out as frenemies but have become close allies. They are forced to make the best of a bad situation when they discover that their husbands are not merely partners at work, but have been romantically involved with each other, and are now planning to leave them to spend a lifetime together. As the events unfurl in San Diego, these women come together to try and deal with the massive turn that their collective lives have taken.

Although it is a comedy show at its core, the series does take into account the jilted feeling that the women must be going through at the fact that their husbands have not only carried on an affair for 20 years but have now left them alone in their 70s. While one always roots for the late coming out, one cannot help but notice the melancholic tone the series often slips into, to demonstrate the mindset of the women. The transition to a bruised melancholy from the tones of a light screwball is executed perfectly by the snappy rapport that exists between Fonda and Tomlin.

The cozy nature of the show comforts viewers, reeling them in, just before they are made to face the all true humanity that underlies the main characters of the show. Thus Tomlin’s Frankie might be full of old hippie jokes and cliches, but beneath her choice of lifestyle lies the fact that she has a troubled son and a gay husband, and all the hippie jokes in the world are not enough to help her escape that reality. Fonda’s character Grace also does her bit at having to cope with a life that was always tidy and controlled but has now gone haywire. It is, however, interesting to see her navigate this crumbling world of hers while still managing to don killer outfits. What really stands out about the show is the deeper question it raises about how many older people can finally come out now, that homosexuality has been legalized and is a socially acceptable lifestyle choice.

If one wants laughter at all times, ‘Grace and Frankie’ is not the comedy for them. The show remains a comedy in a more traditional sense of the term, where everyone gets to be happy in the end. However, the show itself is sometimes on shaky grounds and oscillates between a traditional comedy and a dramedy. However, it is Fonda and Tomlin’s dynamic chemistry that holds it all together. Hopefully, in the upcoming season, the show will continue in a similar fashion, and we will see these women navigate love and life with their usual old-age humor.
