Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Cast: Who is in it?

It’s generally business as usual at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, so Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Gray), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), James Pickens Jr (Richard Webber), Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt), Jesse Williams (Jackson Avery), Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd), Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson), Kelly McCreary (Maggie Pierce) and Giacomo Gianniotti (Andrew DeLuca) will all be back.

However, season 14 wasn’t without its controversial exits as Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew weren’t back as Arizona Robbins and April Kepner, respectively, a decision that resulted in a whole lot of backlash against Pompeo.

It’s was also confirmed that Kim Raver would be coming back as a series regular in season 15 after the finale cliffhanger that saw Teddy Altman reveal she was pregnant, as well as getting the job of interim chief after Miranda decides to take a sabbatical. We will find out more about the cast of season 16 soon enough.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Plot: What is it about?

The show is in its 15th season and the talks about the finale of the show are becoming more obvious. But one thing about the show that is sure is that it will end when Ellen Pompeo doesn’t want to do it.

“Ellen and I have a pact that I’m going to do the show as long as she’s going to do the show. So the show will exist as long as both of us want to do it,” Rhimes, the creator of the show, explained in 2017. “If she wants to stop, we’re stopping. So I don’t know if we’ll see 600 [episodes], but I want to keep it feeling fresh.”

It doesn’t look like the end is in sight, but Pompeo has recently hinted that the producers are beginning to think about what the finale of the show would be. “We’re starting to think about how you would end a show this iconic. How do you end it? But we’re not there yet. We’re going to focus on season 15. We just take it one season at a time,” she revealed. “The show’s a tremendous money maker, let’s be honest. It makes a fortune for everybody and everyone wants to keep it going. Now, it’s sort of fun. We’re in a contest with ourselves. How long can we keep this going and still have this level of quality.”

So unless season 15 suffers a quality and rating drop, don’t expect it to mark the end of Grey’s Anatomy. But perhaps we should be on the lookout for hints towards a finale. Shonda Rhimes has reportedly written an end to the show several times and will return to write the last episode whenever its final season is announced. Whether season 16 will be its last or not is something we will find out soon enough.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Release Date: When will it premiere?

The show was renewed for season 15 by ABC on April 20, 2017. The renewal was no surprise given that it remains one of the network’s top-rated series, has led to a successful spin-off in Station 19, which was recently itself renewed for a second season, and Ellen Pompeo signed a two-year deal in January which takes her through to a potential season 16. She revealed in a conversation with Ellen Degeneres on her show where she expressed her desire to continue with the show that inspires her for the countless lives it has touched throughout its run.

“Grey’s Anatomy has a special place in my heart and millions of viewers feel the same way,” said Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment. “Thanks to fiercely loyal fans who have been on this journey since the beginning, and new generations of viewers who continue to discover the joy and drama of Grey Sloan Memorial, the show is as strong as ever.”

ABC’s longest-running prime-time drama series kicked off its record-breaking 15th season this fall with a two-hour premiere on September 27, 2018. Season 16 could well be expected to have an air date in September 2019. Ellen Pompeo may have hinted that season 16 will be its final season. “I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell,” She told EW. “It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change.”
