Grey’s Anatomy, which can be dubbed as the pioneering series in the genre of medical dramas, has progressed to become a cultural phenomenon over the years. It has garnered countless prestigious accolades since its inception in March 2005. While the first season was well-received by critics and fans alike, the second season proceeded to break all records.

Following its debut, the show has seen its own share of highs and lows but none can deny its steady popularity among fans. It is still one of the highest revenue generators for ABC and is ranked among the most-watched series in the 18-49 demography. 16 seasons in and counting, Grey’s Anatomy shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. And this brings us to the question: will we see a Grey’s Anatomy season 17? Read on to find out.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Release Date

Grey’s Anatomy season 16 premiered on September 26, 2019, on ABC. It was commissioned for 25 episodes but because of the 2020 Corona pandemic, its production was cut short in March 2020. Hence, the season concluded after spanning 21 episodes on April 9, 2020.

On May 10, 2019, when ABC renewed Grey’s Anatomy for season 16, it also announced its recommissioning for a 17th edition. So, yes, another installment from the fan-favorite drama is already in the works. But when it comes to the release date, here’s the thing. Grey’s Anatomy has religiously followed a schedule of airing its seasons every year in September from its second season. However, due to the 2020 health crisis, shooting might get postponed. And if that happens, we can expect Grey’s Anatomy season 17 to premiere sometime in 2021.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Cast: Who Can Be In It?

The lead cast of Grey’s Anatomy comprises of Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Justin Chambers as Alex Karev, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber, Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt, Kim Raver as Teddy Altman, Jesse Williams as Jackson Avery, Camilla Luddington as Jo Karev, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, and Kelly McCreary as Maggie Pierce.

All of the above cast members, expect Justin Chambers (who left the show after season 16), have confirmed their returns for season 17. Cast additions in season 16, namely, Jake Borelli as Levi Schmitt, Greg Germann as Thomas Koracick, and Chris Carmack as Atticus Lincoln, will also make comebacks in the upcoming edition.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Plot: What Can It Be About?

In the 16th season of Grey’s Anatomy, we see the characters going through several emotional and professional dilemmas. In the finale, while Teddy makes up her mind to marry Owen, in spite of cheating on her fiance with Tom, Tom still believes that she is making a wrong decision. Meanwhile, Meredith is desperate to save Richard and DeLuca reveals that he might know the reason behind Richard’s strange ailment.

Season 17 will pick up the story from here and continue to address the lingering questions from season 16’s finale. Showrunner Krista Vernoff has already confirmed that since season 16 had ended prematurely, the plot will take off from its incomplete conclusion. She wrote:

“We are disappointed that we don’t get to complete our storytelling this season. The good news? 1621 plays like a satisfying finale! It’s not where we planned to end, but it’s beautiful & the questions that linger we will answer next year.”
