‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ is a reality docuseries that first premiered on January 23, 2017, on Viceland. The show is directed and created by Danni Mynard and Yemi Bamiro. Jamali Maddix, an actor, and comedian is the host of the show and also the writer along with Paul Byrne.
The show features Jamali traveling to different parts of the United States of America and meeting a group of like-minded people who do not like the federal government. The government, on the other hand, believes that these groups are in fact, domestic terrorists and troublemakers of the country.
Interesting, right? Believe us, we have not even started. Let us take a look at the cast and plot of the show, offering you some quick details before we get into whether there will be a third season to ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’, which has already had a successful two-season run.
Who is Jamali Maddix?
Jamali Maddix is an actor and comedian, and the host of ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’. His mother is British-Italian and his father is Jamaican, thus making Jamali a mixed-race man. He is also the Chortle Student Comedian Award winner, an award set up by a comedy website in the UK.
Jamali, in the show, has been physically attacked by the mobs he has interviewed. Yet the host, without getting influenced by their beliefs and standing his grounds firmly, is able to befriend the extremists and understand their perspective better. This is something that cannot be expected in today’s day and age from many. Needless to say, Jamali Maddix is undoubtedly one of the best hosts to take charge of the show and the audience expects him to return once again in ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ Season 3 as well.
Hate Thy Neighbor Plot: What is it about?
It is extremely easy to mock and criticize intolerance. However, it is much more difficult to get to the core of it and understand the reason behind the intolerance. ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ is a show where Jamali Maddix meets extremists and tries to understand where their thoughts are coming from.
Season 1 premieres with Jamali meeting the members of the Nationalist Socialist Movement, a group based on the ideologies of Neo-Nazism, Neo-Fascism, White Nationalism, Homophobia, and so on. In the following episodes, he meets the members of Lehava, a Jewish anti-assimilation group that opposes social and cultural integration of Jews with the non-Jews. In the final episode of the season, Jamali encounters the extremism in his own country Britain, in the form of Brexit – the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union.
In the following season, Jamali spends time with Ruben Israeli, a former football player, and hate-preacher. The episode features Ruben’s homophobia as he tries to provoke the people of the LGBTQ+ community in the Southern Decadence festival in New Orleans.
In the following episodes, he spends time with two groups on the borders of Mexico and the USA, trying to protect their country. He also meets people belonging to feminist groups and understands the concepts behind the third and second waves along with what anti-feminism stands for. He visits a prison in South Carolina and meets kids that are enrolled for ‘correctional weekends’, a program that tries to keep the youth away from a life of crime.
The season ends with Jamali meeting a group of extremists, who hate the federal government, do not like their laws or currency and even pray for a genocide.
Once Jamali is done filming with the extremists and talking to them about their ideologies and thoughts, he later presents his experience in the form of a comedy set on stage, in front of a live audience. There, he expresses what he felt during the conversations and how really he feels about all of it.
Hate Thy Neighbor Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ Season 2 premiered on January 23, 2018, on Viceland. The season was spread across 10 episodes and the last episode released on March 27, 2018. Though the viewership data for the channel is not very impressive, ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ over the last two seasons has received positive feedback from viewers and critics.
Maddix has been in a tough spot while hosting the episodes. “One part of me thinks – Yeah, why am I giving these people a light? What’s the point?” he said. “Another part of me thinks, but these people do exist. Yeah, we can ignore them, but it doesn’t stop them from existing.”
The point of view of the extremists has not changed Maddix. The show might have changed his comedy style but he does not claim to have become a political genius overnight. “It’s not like now I’m wearing a turtleneck and sunglasses, talking about ‘the system,’ ” he said. “But, for a little while, it did change me as a person, and it changed my comedy a bit. It was hard to be funny when I came back.”
There is no official announcement about the release of ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ Season 3 yet. Jamali, on the other hand, is busy with his comedy tour that apparently is scheduled until February 19, 2020. So, if we have to guess, we believe it is likely for ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ Season 3 to release sometime in May 2020.
