Heartstrings Plot: What is it about?

‘Heartstrings’ is potentially a melodrama that explores issues like love, friendship, and dreams. The first season of the series follows the multi-layered relationship of the protagonists, Lee Shin and Lee Gyu-won, in the backdrop of a performing arts institution. Lee Shin is the popular arrogant leader of the band – The Stupid, while Lee Gyu-won is a college student, majoring in Traditional Korean Music.

Both of their parents had been music paragons – Lee Shin’s father, Lee Hyun Soo, was a popular guitarist during his time, who is almost on the verge of death due to drug addiction. Gyu-won’s grandfather, Lee Dong-jin, is one of the top traditional musicians of his time, who wants to see his granddaughter come out as a traditional music prodigy.

Back at the institute, a series of misinterpretations between the two make them start on the wrong foot. Gyu-won is unable to comprehend why Lee Shin is so popular. Nonetheless, she is forced to go into one of The Stupid’s live performances, where she gets captivatingly attracted to Lee Shin.

Both of them are brought to a formal introduction when they decide to join the performance group for the approaching 100th anniversary of the University. By spending more time with each other, they fall in love with each other.

Gyu-won competes with the spoiled daughter of the Chairman, Han Hee-joo, for the role that she wanted to play in the musical, but loses to her. However, Gyu-won’s talent does not go uncharted. Fearing that her daughter might lose to Gyu-won, Hee-joo’s mother tries to defame Gyu-won. Lee Shin works with Gyu-won’s mentor, Kim Suk-hyun to clear her name.

It is established that Hee-joo is suffering from a vocal cord infection. Hence, her role is given to Gyu-won. The kind-hearted Gyu-won lets Hee-joo stand on stage, while she sings for her backstage. The media soon gets to know that it was actually Gyu-won who sang for Hee-joo and she is offered to record an album. Now, she must choose between her dream and her love.
