First Trailer for ‘High School Musical: The Musical’ is Here

Disney+ has released the first trailer of ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’, a 10-episode webseries that follows the East High drama club as they stage their school’s first-ever production of High School Musical. The trailer shows Disney’s commitment towards investing in a second generation of ‘High School Musical’, who will hopefully live up to the mood set by the unabashedly long title of the show.

Just as the title suggests, ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ is a meta-series much like ‘High School Musical’. It once again follows a group of high school students as they play on a musical. However, this time the twist is that the show they are playing on is ‘High School Musical’ itself. We will see a group of high-schoolers as they compete to nab roles in the musical while forging or repairing relationships with their co-stars. The trailer is set at East High School, the same place where the 2006 movie and the two follow-ups were set. We see the students compete for the roles of Troy Bolton, Gabriella Montez and Sharpay Evans, played by Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale, in the original franchise. Since it is a meta show, the current batch is portrayed to be superfans of the classic Disney movie. One of them even comments, “I’ve seen the original movie 37 times, and the first 15 minutes of both sequels.” We are introduced to Ricky, E.J., and Nini. There is some pining that goes on as Ricky tries to win back his ex-girlfriend Nini, who is dating E.J.

‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ will be a ten-episode show styled like a documentary. Each episode will have a new rendition of a song from ‘High School Musical’ as well as an original song. In the trailer, we get to see ‘Stick to the Status Quo’ being performed. Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, and Olivia Rodrigo are the stars of the upcoming series. Tim Federle, known for ‘Ferdinand’ and Olivia Goldstick, known for ‘Pretty Little Liars‘, serve as the executive producers. The latter also serves as the showrunner. Apart from that, Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush, the executive producers of ‘High School Musical’, are also executive producing.

‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ will be available for streaming when Disney+ comes out on November 12, 2019. It is the first wave of original content from the streaming platform, that is looking to maximize its subscriptions by adding shows that are related to popular franchises. Notably, the aim of Disney+ is to have 10 million subscribers by the end of 2020. Apart from ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ the other shows that are premiering with the streamer’s debut include, ‘The Mandalorian‘, the ‘Star Wars‘ drama, ‘The Imagineering Story’, a docuseries, and ‘Lady and the Tramp’.
