Based on the book series of the same name by Philip Pullman, ‘His Dark Materials’ is a fantasy series that tells the story of two children connected to each other, despite being from different worlds. The story is known for exploring the themes of science and religion, most often being critical of the latter which has also allowed it to spark controversy. It has previously been adapted for the big screen as the movie ‘The Golden Compass’, which failed to capture the soul of the story and hence was trashed by critics as well as the fans.
Now, Jack Thorne has adapted the series for BBC and HBO. Written and executive produced by him, the show has succeeded in pleasing the fans who had been concerned about the book-to-screen adaptation. Its first season has received great reviews and favourable ratings. But is that enough to guarantee a second season for ‘His Dark Materials’? Let’s find out.
His Dark Materials Cast: Who’s in it?
The protagonist of the show is a girl named Lyra. She is played by Dafne Keen, the young actress known for her role in the superhero action flick, ‘Logan’. The role of her uncle, who later turns out to be her father, Lord Asriel, is played by James McAvoy. Emmy Award-winner Ruth Wilson brings to life the character of Mrs Coulter, a charming woman with questionable intentions and a formidable character. Lin-Manuel Miranda appears in the role of Lee Scoresby, an aeronaut who becomes a part of Lyra’s journey and goes on to play a much bigger role in it than he had initially intended to.
In addition to this, the show also stars Clarke Peters as Dr Carne, Anne-Marie Duff as Ma Costa, James Cosmo as Farder Coram, Ariyon Bakare as Lord Boreal, Ruta Gedmintas as the witch Serafina Pekkala, and Lucian Msamati as John Faa. Helen McCrory voices Stelmaria, Asriel’s daemon; Kit Connor voices Pantalaimon, and Joe Tandberg voices Iorek Byrnison.
His Dark Materials Plot: What’s it about?
‘His Dark Materials’ follows the story of a young girl named Lyra Belacqua. Having grown up in Jordan, the only friends she has known are the kitchen boy, Roger, and her own daemon, Pantalaimon. So, when Roger goes missing, she decides to do whatever it takes to find him and bring him back home. This leads her on a journey that brings her face to face with the dangers she never knew existed, while also revealing some harsh truths about her own life.
Meanwhile, in a parallel world, a young boy named Will Parry is going through some difficult times with his mother, who has become increasingly paranoid since the disappearance of his father. By the end of the first season, Will and Lyra’s journeys converge and they meet in a third world.
When will His Dark Materials Season 2 Release?
‘His Dark Materials’ Season 1 premiered on HBO on November 4, 2019, and concluded on December 23, 2019. The first season received positive reviews from critics, with the praise directed mainly towards the excellent visuals and the superb performances by its actors. It stayed true to the source material while also adding its own nuances to the story. Dafne Keen’s portrayal of young Lyra has brought her a lot of praise and Ruth Wilson breathing life into the enigmatic Mrs Coulter has been applauded as well.
Expecting such a positive response from both critics and audience, BBC and HBO have already greenlit the second season. Things are moving fast on that front as the growth of the young actors has to stay in sync with their characters who would still be the same age the next time we see them. If this pace continues, we can expect the second season of ‘His Dark Materials’ to premiere sometime in November 2020. When we receive more information about it, we will update this section.
His Dark Materials Season 2 Spoilers
The first season of ‘His Dark Materials’ completes the arc of the first book in the series, The Northern Lights. Lord Asriel succeeds in opening up the door between the two worlds, though at a great cost to Lyra. With both her parents effectively being the villain of her story, she embarks on the path to discover the true origins of Dust, which is what this whole fiasco has been all about anyway, and follows her father into another world. Meanwhile, Will’s arc aligns with her story, which covers the initial chapters of the second book.
The next season will have both the protagonists joining forces to find out what exactly is up with multiple worlds and both of their parents so entangled in this mess. Will and Lyra find themselves in a world that is new for both of them and has dangers of its own. If you don’t see any adults in this new world, there is a very good reason for that. Moreover, we’ll also get to know about the Subtle Knife, which is the title of the second book in the series, on which the next season is to be based.
