Based on author Philip Pullman’s beloved eponymous trilogy, ‘His Dark Materials’ is a fantasy series that follows Lyra, a brave young girl from an alternate world. Lyra’s unswerving quest to find her kidnapped friend leads her to unravel a sinister plot of a secret organization, encounter extraordinary beings, and protect dangerous secrets.

With its screenplay written by Jack Thorne, the series is produced for BBC and HBO, with the latter handling international distribution. ‘His Dark Materials’ opened to a positive response from critics and audiences alike. Fans are eagerly awaiting its much-anticipated sophomore run. Well, here’s everything we know about ‘His Dark Materials’ season 2!

His Dark Materials Season 2 Release Date

‘His Dark Materials’ season 1 premiered on November 3, 2019, on BBC One in the UK and on November 4, 2019, on HBO in the US and rest of the world. It consists of eight episodes with a runtime of 45-55 minutes each.

Even before the inaugural season’s premiere, the series scored an early second season renewal, and we finally have a release date for the project. ‘His Dark Materials’ season 2 is set to premiere on November 8, 2020, in the UK. A week later, it will land on HBO Max in the US on November 16, 2020.

His Dark Materials Season 2 Cast: Who is in it?

The majority of the chief cast members of season 1 are set to return for the second outing of ‘His Dark Materials.’ This includes Dafne Keen as feisty protagonist Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as the terrifying Mrs. Coulter, Lin Manuel-Miranda as aeronaut Lee Scoresby, Ruta Gedmintas as witch queen Serafina Pekkala, Joe Tandberg as the voice of armored bear – Iorek Byrnison, and Helen McCrory as the voice of Lord Asriel’s daemon, Stelmaria.

Joining these returning cast members in season 2 is Andrew Scott as Will’s father, Colonel John Parry/Jopari, alongside his ‘Fleabag’ co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge voicing over for his daemon. Other additions include newcomer Amir Wilson as Lyra’s new BFF Will Parry, Terence Stamp as Giacomo Paradisi, Simone Kirby as Mary Malone, and Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi.

However, one season 1 cast member won’t be reprising his role this time around – James McAvoy, who plays Lyra’s father, Lord Asriel. Initial plans were to have a special stand-alone episode devoted to Asriel’s journey, which was unfortunately scrapped owing to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis as the production was halted in its track amidst the filming of that very episode. Given Asriel’s big role in the third book, it is likely that he’ll return to the show in the future.

His Dark Materials Season 2 Plot: What can it be About?

eason 1 of ‘His Dark Materials’ is the adaptation of the first novel in Philip Pullman’s series, ‘Northern Lights.’ We see Lyra set out to the frozen North to save her kidnapped friend Roger, where she learns some shocking revelations about her father, Lord Asriel, and his investigations into ‘Dust.’ Not only does he betray Lyra’s trust, but also joins forces with Mrs. Coulter in his war against the Authority.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter searches for Lyra, hell-bent on bringing her home by any means necessary. Distraught by their evil motives, Lyra hides among the mountain crags just long enough for Coulter to depart. Determined to protect Dust, she and her daemon enter the open portal in the final moments of season 1, leaving their world behind.

Season 2 will tackle the second book in the series, ‘The Subtle Knife,’ and is confirmed to have seven episodes, following the loss of the standalone Asriel episode. Season 2 will pick up directly after the events of the season 1 finale. Following the tragic death of her best friend, Roger, at the hands of her own father, Lyra finds herself in Cittagazze, a city overrun by specters, living shrouds that attack adults. It’s here that her path will lead her to Will, a child from our world who’s fated to wield the Subtle Knife.

The dagger in question has the ability to slice between worlds, as explained by Will’s father. It’s an object that could change the entire course of the coming war. The youngsters might be seen working together to investigate the mysterious Dust phenomenon. It’s won’t take much time for Lyra and Will to realize that their destinies are intertwined in the mission to reunite Will with his father, a matter further exacerbated when a war breaks out around them.
