Christmas is a special time for all of us, and it enshrines certain values of family, hope, and expectations. Most importantly, it is a happy time. Several films have tried to capture the Christmas spirit, but perhaps none have been as successful as ‘Home Alone’. The 1990 American comedy written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus led to an entire franchise including four sequels. Upon release, the film was a critical and commercial success, and still remains one of the most loved Christmas movies of all time. ‘Home Alone’ has garnered praise for its strong performances, both from the lead and supporting actors, and for the comedic approach that the film takes. Since it has become a massive hit, you must be wondering where you can watch the movie. Well, before we tell you that, let us tell you a little about the plot of ‘Home Alone’.

What is Home Alone About?

‘Home Alone’ tells us the story of the McCallister family, especially the young boy Kevin, who is accidentally left behind and has to defend the house against two burglars. We are introduced to the family as they plan to go away to Paris for their Christmas vacation. Meanwhile, we see a burglar dressed as a cop outside, taking information about all the houses in the neighborhood, counting on some to be empty, so they can rob them. The youngest son, Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) has a penchant for trouble and an altercation with his brother, Buzz, leaves him in his parents’ bad books. When they berate him, Kevin wishes that his entire family would disappear. Now, the next sequence is shot in a manner as if to make it seem like a Christmas wish come true, but actually, heavy winds knock out the power lines, causing an outage. As a result, the family oversleeps and in their rush to get to the airport, they forget Kevin.

When Kevin wakes up, he finds his family gone and thinks that his wish has come true. He relishes his newfound freedom. The movie wonderfully incorporates some comedic scenes that give it a distinctive tone. However, all the fun quickly comes to an end when Kevin has a run-in with his neighbor Old Man Marley (Roberts Blossom) who is rumored to be a serial killer. In the meanwhile, the ‘Wet Bandits’, a pair who have been terrorizing and burgling the neighborhood, targets the McCallister home. Kevin manages to fend off the burglars, Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). Around the same time, the family realizes that Kevin is missing, but when they land in Paris, it is impossible to get a flight back to Chicago as everything is booked in the holiday season. The mother, however, manages to get one ticket out but only up to Scranton. From there she finally manages to get a ride out with a polka band, and they promise her that they will drop her off in Chicago.

Marv and Harry figure out that Kevin had tricked them the first time into thinking the house was not empty, and Kevin overhears their plans of breaking in. Naturally, the little boy is scared and asks a store Santa to bring back his family for Christmas. He also makes up with his neighbor and gets a sudden bout of courage and decides to protect his home against the bandits. Kevin then sets numerous booby traps all over the house impeding the bandits’ entry and giving them so much trouble that they are ultimately caught by the cops. The film ends on a happy note as things get back to normal with Kevin reuniting with his family, as we see another sibling squabble about to break out between Buzz and him.
