‘Homeland’ has been a television series that successfully manages to provide gripping geopolitical drama, wedded with compelling characterization. The post-9/11 war drama is currently in its final season and attempts to provide viewers with a satisfying circular end, aiming to tie the whole tale up aptly.
The series began with the CIA operative, Carrie Mathison suspecting a U.S. Marine, Nicholas Brody of teaming up with the Al-Qaeda. Now, several seasons after Brody’s plotline had been dealt with, Carrie finds herself in a position similar to the Marine’s.
The first episode of the eighth season of ‘Homeland’ captivatingly presents the above-mentioned premise: Carrie is considered unfit to rejoin the CIA at first after being tortured by the Russians in the previous season. However, Saul reinstates her into the organization by tasking her with taking care of a deal between Afghanistan’s Vice President and the Taliban. At the end of the episode, Carrie sees her Russian torturer, Yevgeny (who she had also been mysteriously hugging in flashbacks) at the Afghan VP’s office.

Homeland Season 8 Episode 2 Recap:
The second episode of the eighth season begins with the Afghan VP, G’ulom telling Carrie that Yevgeny was a “businessman.” Carrie fails to convince G’ulom to retract his statement of not releasing Talibani prisoners. Later, Saul tells her that she cannot pursue Yevgeny as he (Saul) had made an immunity deal with him (Yevgeny) to release Carrie.
However, Carrie soon gets an anonymous lead regarding a woman named Samira who had attempted to shed light on G’ulom’s corruption. Her husband had been killed in a car bombing which was supposed to be targeted at her. Carrie asks the Kabul station chief, Mike Dunne’s assistant, Jenna Bragg to set up a fake interview with Samira so that she (Carrie) can search Samira’s apartment.
Carrie finds a USB drive, but Samira gets suspicious of Jenna and tries to flee. Samira gets tied up when she tries to leave. Carrie unties her. She finds Samira’s research on the USB drive which implicates G’ulom in serious corruption charges. Carrie wants to use the findings to blackmail the VP into retracting the statement.
Carrie confronts G’ulom and eventually, manages to blackmail him into retracting his statement. The VP holds a press conference, announcing his intent to release Talibani prisoners as a part of the proposed peace agreement. To celebrate, Carrie goes to drink with her coworkers. However, she runs into Yevgeny and shouts at him.
Yevgeny tells Carrie that he was the one who had tipped her about Samira. Plus, he reminds her that she begged him to never leave her side at the Russian prison.
Meanwhile, Saul finds out that Haissam Haqqani (the main antagonist of Season 4) wants a peace agreement with the Afghan government. Saul asks Haqqani’s second cousin to relay a message to Haqqani, asking for a meeting. However, Haqqani’s convoy gets hit by a rocket launcher just when he is about to meet Saul. In the confusion, Saul gets kidnapped. He wakes up and sees Haqqani, who knocks Saul out using his riffle’s butt end.
