Currently in its final season, ‘Homeland‘ has become a satisfactorily complete series with an end that harkens back to the first season. In an attempt to tie the larger narrative of the whole show convincingly together, the writers have opted to present a final season premise that functions as a circular and symbolic ending/allusion to the Brody plotline.
To be clearer, ‘Homeland’ began with the central conflict revolving around the U.S. Marine, Nicholas Brody and the protagonist, Carrie Mathison’s suspicion that he (Brody) had teamed up with the Al-Qaeda. Now in the eighth season, Mathison finds herself having to prove her loyalty and fitness herself after being tortured by the Russians.
Fortunately, the series does not waste any time in advancing that plotline. In the first two episodes of the eighth season itself, Carrie manages to get a major victory for the CIA by making the Afghan VP retract his previous press statement and agree to release Talibani prisoners due to a peace agreement. However, another past plot is somewhat reopened with the return of a major character from a previous season: Haissam Haqqani! Haqqani kidnaps Saul, and that proves to be yet another callback to a previous conflict of the series.

Homeland Season 8 Episode 3 Recap:
The Saul-being-kidnapped storyline threatens to become repetitive but is saved by the third episode’s focus on the conflict between Haissam and his son, Jalal. Jalal is shown talking to the ISI agent, Tasneem (Indian actress, Nimrat Kaur from season 4). The two think that Haissam died after the events of the last episode, but viewers know that that is untrue.
However, Haqqani manages to trick his son and find out about this involvement with the ISI. This convinces Haqqani that Saul was not the one who tipped off the ISI about their meeting. Haqqani banishes his son. Then, Saul and Haqqani discuss the peace agreement. Saul promises more power to Haqqani if the Taliban decommission their weapons. Haqqani agrees.
On the other hand, Carrie (with a wig) and Yevgeny meet. Yevgeny says sorry for leaving Carrie alone and also reveals that he had no part in Roshan’s murder. However, Carrie lies to Dunne about her meeting, leaving viewers to wonder what her gameplan is.
Meanwhile, a possible power play between the American President and Vice President is also teased. Could this turn out to be another roadblock in the Taliban peace agreement? There is only one way to find out.
