‘Imposters’ is an American dark comedy television series that airs on Bravo. The show first premiered on February 7, 2017. The series has been created by Adam Brooks of ‘Definitely, Maybe’ fame and Paul Adelstein of ‘Prison Break’ and ‘Private Practice’ fame.
Most of Bravo’s reputation as an NBC-owned network is set up by its roster of shows that cater to women aged 25 to 50. Other than the repeat telecasts of already released feature-length films and theatrical productions, the lion’s share of these shows fall under the category of reality television, most notably, shows like the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise and its many spinoffs, and the more recent ‘Southern Charm’ – unscripted TV set on gated posh communities with the lifestyle of the elite milieu, which is often alienating rather than relatable for the largely middle-class target audience of these shows.
However, what comparatively goes unnoticed are the good old scripted dramedies, which albeit small in number on the network, are often of a praiseworthy quality. ‘Imposters’ is one such pleasant surprise for the critics for its commendable writing and polished presentation. As the name alludes to, the show follows a con artist and her antics. She gets involved with men and women, and eventually end up leaving them, robbed of all their possessions, including their hearts.
Con artists despite being disliked in public, enjoy massive success in pop culture and thrillers – bestsellers like ‘The Man in The Rockefeller Suit’, Patricia Highsmith’s ‘Ripley’ series, and the Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks-starring cult classic ‘Catch Me If You Can’, all stand testament to the success of the subgenre. Likewise, ‘Imposters’ also enjoyed this success and the strong and passionate fan base that came from it. Critics have lauded the series as well for combining slapstick comedy, good writing, a fair share of twists, and brilliant lead performance, all of which culminates in surprising and ambiguous conclusions.
Imposters Cast: Who is in it?
The show’s intrigue generates for the most part on the protagonist, enacted by Inbar Lavi. Although Inbar Lavi does not have much press in large-numbers Hollywood productions, with roles in only generic thrillers or action gigs like ‘The Last Witch Hunter’, ‘Street Kings 2’ and ‘House of Dust’, she is popular on the silver screen, with appearances in ‘Entourage’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels’, and a main cast gig in the ‘Prison Break : Resurrection’. She also recently appeared in ‘Lucifer’ in the role of Eve. In ‘Imposters’ Lavi appears as Maddie, the con artist.
Other main characters on the show include Rob Heaps as Ezra Bloom, one of Maddie’s targets. He teams up with others, including Richard Evans and Jules Langmore to find Maddie. These two characters are played by Parker Young and Marianne Rendón, respectively. Brian Benben and Katherine LaNasa appear as Max and Sally, both of whom work with Maddie for a mysterious figure calling himself ‘The Doctor’. This character is played by Ray Porscia.
Stephen Bishop appears as Patrick Campbell, who is actually an undercover FBI called Agent Simmons and happens to be the latest mark of these con artists. There are some recurring characters who lend a degree of unprecedented richness to the show, and among them, most notably, is Uma Thurman, who is famous for her roles in Quentin Tarantino’s movies like ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’. She recently appeared in Netflix’s ‘Chambers‘. In this show, Thurman appears as Lenny Cohen.
Imposters Plot: What is it about?
‘Imposters’ focuses on a female con artist who marries people before disappearing from their lives with their money, and leaving them heartbroken. However, Maddie is not a free operator, and in fact, is part of a team of other con artists, who work for ‘The Doctor’. It is perhaps a modern-day spin on the Dickensian pickpocket angle in ‘Oliver Twist’. Anyhow, the way the con works is that the target or the mark is made to fall in love with Maddie, and in the meanwhile, the others ingrain themselves in the lives of these marks. Then they rob these people and leave. We are made aware that ‘The Doctor’ has several such rings operating in various cities, so clearly he is not one to be trifled with.
However, if you keep conning people long enough, someone down the line is going to come looking for you. This happens with Maddie, and even more so, because she doesn’t just steal their money, she also leaves them heartbroken after making them fall for her. The degree of betrayal is immense, and one of her marks decides enough is enough. He teams up with a couple of other marks and tries to track down this woman to get their money back. In the meanwhile, the team of con artists seems to be playing with fire as they target Patrick Campbell, a mark who they do not realize is an undercover FBI Agent called Simmons.
The Hollywood Reporter succinctly sums up the show’s experience, saying, ” ‘Imposters’ really could be a romantic comedy, except that it’s only occasionally funny and the romances are all lies on one side and delusions on the other. There are occasional laughs and bits and pieces of the concept that I like — in some other context, the “inept con artist” part of the plot could be something inspired, or at least different from the current TV paradigm — but really the best reason to watch Imposters will be for Lavi and possibly just to get excited for what she’ll do next.”
Hopefully, if there is an upcoming season, we will see more of Lavi, who intentionally or unintentionally hogs much of the spotlight. She transitions between characters and aliases smoothly, and it is fascinating to watch.
Imposters Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Imposters’ Season 2 premiered on April 5, 2018. On June 1, 2018, Bravo canceled the series. However, the show has a vocal fan base and there have been calls for it to be picked up and streamed, especially on Netflix. Now that Netflix has brought on Lavi to play Eve in ‘Lucifer‘, perhaps they will pick up this show too, where she gets to be the protagonist. If that happens, we will update you about ‘Imposters’ Season 3 release date.
While we wait for any positive news on ‘Imposters’ Season 3, check out the season 2 trailer to refresh your memories. If you haven’t seen the show yet, head over to Bravo to catch all the episodes of the previous seasons.
