How did Jermaine Dupri earn his money and wealth?
Jermaine Dupri is the professional name of rapper Jermaine Dupri Mauldin who was born in Ashville, North Carolina on September 23, 1972. Apart from being a rapper, he is also singer, songwriter, record executive, record producer, DJ, actor, and TV producer. Dupri was initiated into the music industry even before he turned 10 years old when he went on stage and danced with Diana Ross during her show. After this, he joined a hip-hop dance group “Whodini” and appeared in their video “Freaks Come Out At Night”.
Dupri started his career by producing his first act “Silk Tymes Leather” (1990), a female hip-hop trio. He went on to form “Kris Kross” (1991), a teen duo he has met at the mall. “Totally Krossed Out” (1992) was the first album and the singles “Warm It Up” and “Jump” went multi-platinum. In 1993, Dupri established his own record label and called it “So So Def Recordings”. Under his new banner, he signed up “Xscape” an R&B group and released “Hummin Comin’ at Cha” (1993). He also released “Da Brat’s” album “Funkdafied” (1994). He collaborated with other artists like “Mariah Carey” in her hit single “Always Be My Baby” (1995).
Dupri released “Usher’s” second album “My Way” (1997) which he co-wrote as well as produced. “You Make Me Wanna”, “Nice & Slow” and “My Way” were all certified Platinum and charted the Billboards as well. He was also part of the team which released “Destiny’s Child” (1998) debut album. “The Party Continues” was the first single from his debut studio album “Jermaine Dupri Presents Life in 1472: The Original Soundtrack” which he released the same year. Dupri again collaborated with Usher and co-wrote and co-produced in his next album “Confessions” (2004). Three singles from the album “Confessions Part Ii”, “Burn” and “My Boo” became number one in the Billboard Top 100. He also collaborated with “Mariah Carey” and her next album “The Emancipation of Mimi” (2005) where “We Belong Together” was a smash hit.
Dupri has contributed to the musical careers of many other artists such as Janet Jackson, Snoop Dog, Lil’ Bow Wow, Chante Moore and Murphy Lee etc. Apart from music, Dupri has also ventured into television when he created “The Rap Game” (2015), a reality TV series with “Queen Latifa” which showcases emerging young artists.
Dupri has also published his memoir titled “Young, Rich and Dangerous: The Making of a Music Mogul” (2007).
