Jim Jarmusch’s New Zombie Film Has All-Star Cast

Jim Jarmusch’s upcoming movie will be a zombie film titled ‘The Dead Don’t Die’ and will be his first full-length movie since ‘Paterson’ in 2016. Jarmusch seems to have pulled out all stops for the upcoming project as well and has included a stellar cast that is star-studded and impressive. Bill Murray stars in the upcoming movie apart from Iggy Pop, RZA the rapper, Tom Waits and Selena Gomez. The cast also includes talented actors like Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Chloë Sevigny, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Carol Kane, and Sara Driver.

While details about the film remain scant, the distributors of the movie, Focus Features, has described the upcoming project as “the greatest zombie cast ever disassembled”. Jarmusch has been very involved with the film since last summer and while a lot remains unclear, Murray has described the script to be hilarious, which is saying something. Variety also reports that on set photos have shown Murray dressed as a police officer while Driver and Sevigny have been portrayed as his colleagues. Pictures also showed Selena Gomez and Austin Butler, with the latter all bloodied up.

‘The Dead Don’t Die’ has been written by and will be directed by Jarmusch. Apart from Focus Pictures,  Universal Pictures International will distribute the film worldwide. Notably, Focus has worked with Jarmusch on two previous occasions, which include ‘Broken Flowers’ in 2005, and ‘The Limits of Control’ in 2009. ‘The Dead Don’t Die’ has Carter Logan and Joshua Astrachan as its producers.

Coming back to the star-studded cast, Jarmusch has collaborated with quite a few of them on previous occasions. He worked with Iggy Pop in his 1995 film, ‘Dead Man’, where Iggy has a small but memorable appearance. One of Jarmusch’s latest projects was in 2016 when he made ‘Gimme Danger’, a documentary on Iggy’s band, the Stooges. RZA too worked with Jarmusch on his 1999 movie ‘Ghost Dog: the Way of the Samurai’. The rapper provided the score for the film and appeared in it along with the extremely talented Forest Whitaker. Tom Waits too, has had a history of collaborating with Jarmusch and appeared in the 1986 project ‘Down by the Law’, and in Jarmusch’s intellectually pleasing film ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’. Waits appeared in the segment with Iggy Pop in the film which also starred RZA, Bill Murray and GZA. Murray also teamed up with Jarmusch for ‘Broken Flowers’, while Driver starred in the recent project ‘Paterson’.

Before ‘The Dead Don’t Die’, Jarmusch’s only other experience at portraying the undead was in ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ which was a romantic story involving vampires. The film also had a stellar cast including Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Anton Yelchin, Mia Wasikowska, Jeffrey Wright, Slimane Dazi, and John Hurt. Considering this portrayal was an artistic success, winning Jarmusch a nomination for the Palme d’Or at 2013 Cannes Film Festival, we hope the upcoming zombie film also has a similar successful streak.

‘The Dead Don’t Die’ is set to premiere at the Cannes in May, and receive a worldwide release on June 14, as confirmed by Focus Features.
