Kakegurui Plot:

The story of Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler is set in the Hyakkaou Private Academy, which is an elite boarding school for the children of Japan’s most wealthy and powerful people and boasts many future leaders and professionals among its student body. While the Hyakkaou Private Academy appears to be just another elite school, it’s not. Unlike any other school in the country, the hierarchy in Hyakkaou Private Academy is not decided by academic prowess, athletic ability, or seniority, but through gambling. Students in the school are ranked by their monetary contributions to the student council, and the school has an intricate gambling system in place through which students bet their fortunes against one another. This gambling system, by no means, is a lenient one. While students who win in their gambles gain prestige, popularity, and connections, those who fall into debt are forced to become “house pets” or servants to the rest of the student body. These “house pets” have to wear collar-like tags and are called “doggy” or “kitty” according to their genders. The “house pets” system is designed in such a way that indebted students, through service, can pay off their debts while in school. However, if they are not able to pay off their debts by graduation, they have to abide by “life schedules” which dictate their futures.

The gambling system in the school consists of dozens of games, and these gambling activities take place after class. Some of the games students engage in are Ballot Rock-Paper-Scissors, Double Concentration, Life or Death, Debt Exchange Game, Tarot Cards of Fate, Finger Cutting Guillotine, Nym Type Zero, Grin and Bear It: Death Macaron, and Greater Good Game, among many others.

In this backdrop, the show follows the story of a second-year student called Yumeko Jabami, who transfers into the Hyakkaou Private Academy. Although Yumeko comes across as cheerful, beautiful and intelligent, beneath her attractive personality is a gambling addiction. A compulsive gambler by nature, Yumeko does not gamble to win prestige or money, but does it for the sake of gambling. As a result, she is not easily understood by others in the school, and with her exceptional observational abilities, Yumeko quickly sees through gambling scams, and puts the student council’s reputation at risk. As Yumeko’s reputation spreads across the school, the student council feels threatened and frantically tries to shut her down, and the show follows this power tussle between Yumeko and the student council.

Kakegurui Characters:

Although Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler has dozens of characters, the show has just three main characters. Below, we’ve provided you with brief backgrounds on each of the main characters in the show.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

Yumeko Jabami: The main protagonist of the show, Yumeko is an attractive second-year high school student who transfers into the Hyakkaou Private Academy. Not only is Yumeko beautiful and silver tongued, she also has exceptional observational abilities which make her a formidable adversary in any gambling game. Further, she is shown to be a compulsive gambler, and she gambles for the sake of it, deriving satisfaction from the thrill of putting everything on the line. As Yumeko settles into her new school, she soon builds a reputation for herself, and her exposé on gambling scams pits her against the school’s student council, which frantically tries to shut her down to maintain its own reputation.

Mary Saotome: Yumeko’s classmate and a pro gambler, Mary is the first one who challenges Yumeko to a duel, but she ends up losing to Yumeko. Initially, Mary is shown to be an extremely sadistic person who derives pleasure from making others her house pets. However, when she loses to Yumeko and is forced to become a house pet herself, she almost loses her mind as her pride comes crashing down. Later, she regains her status in the school, but no longer exhibits the arrogance and sadism which made other people loathe her. Over the course of the show, she even becomes friends with Yumeko, despite being resentful towards her initially.

Ryota Suzui: Another major character in the show, Ryota is Yumeko and Mary’s classmate. When Yumeko joins the Hyakkaou Private Academy, Ryota is a house pet under the service of Mary. However, when Yumeko frees him from his debt, he becomes close friends with her. A kind and friendly person, Ryota does not demonstrate much expertise or prowess in gambling and is shown to be a very timid person initially. However, as he mixes more and more with Yumeko, he grows in confidence and becomes an adept gambler.
