How did Kareena Kapoor earn her money and wealth?
Kareena Kapoor was born in Bombay, Maharashtra on September 21, 1980. She is also known by her popular nickname ‘Bebo’ which was also used in a song in one of her films ‘Kambakkht Ishq’. She is the granddaughter of the original showman of Indian cinema Raj Kapoor and the daughter of actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita. Although she belonged to a family of actors she enrolled herself for an acting course in the Film and Television Institute of India. She was the first choice for the female lead in Rakesh Roshan’s blockbuster ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hain’ (2000) but she opted out of the project and instead made her debut with J.P. Dutta’s ‘Refugee’ opposite Abhishek Bachchan later that year. ‘Refugee’ met with a lackluster reception at the box office but Kareena managed to win the Filmfare award for best debutante and thus began her glorious innings in Bollywood.
Kareena Kapoor first tasted box-office success with the romantic comedy ‘Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai’ (2001) which established her as a star in her own right. Her leading man was Tusshar Kapoor, son of Jeetendra who has a constant co-star of her mother Babita. Her presence in Karan Johar’s ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ as the second female lead to Kajol did wonders for her career. Her character Pooja – ‘Poo’ for those who have seen the film – instantly became a rage among the youngsters. With the success of the film she became one of the highest paid actresses of Indian cinema.
At one point in her career the hits became elusive but her remuneration touched astronomical figures. Films like ‘Yuva’ and ‘Dev’ were commercial failures but that didn’t affect her market value. She was paid around 1.5 crore per film. The biggest turning point in her career came with ‘Jab We Met’ (2007). It was not only a financial success but also made her reigning queen of Bollywood. However the biggest hits of her career were yet to come.
With ‘3 Idiots’ (2009) she broke the glass ceiling and entered the megastar club. It became the first Indian film to gross over 200 crore at the domestic box-office. ‘3 Idiots’ was followed by ‘Bodyguard’ (2011) which became the biggest hit of the year with a worldwide gross of 230 crore. Films like ‘Ra.One’ (2011), ‘Singham Returns’ (2014) and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ (2015) proved that she is a good luck charm for the box-office and earned herself an invincible position in Indian cinema. ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ in particular proved to be a milestone in her career as it grossed 629 crore globally.
