Kevin Smith is Bringing ‘He-Man’ Anime Series to Netflix

Kevin Smith is all set to bring a ‘He-Man’ anime series to Netflix. He will serve as showrunner and producer of the show. The filmmaker took fans by surprise at the Power-Con in Anaheim, when he announced the news that he has teamed up with the streaming service as well as Mattel Television, to make a new anime series that is being described as “a wholly original story set in the epic world of Mattel’s over 35-year-old global He-Man toy franchise.”

The upcoming series has been titled ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’. It focuses on the storylines which remain unresolved from the classic ’80s era and will pick up the journeys of several characters from the points where they left off many decades ago. It has been planned as a limited series, which is being produced by Mattel Television. Rob David, who is the vice president at Mattel TV besides being the author of ‘He-Man: The Eternity War’, serves as the executive producer of the show. The writers include Eric Carrasco, known for ‘Supergirl‘, Tim Sheridan, famous for ‘Reign of the Supermen’, Diya Mishra, of ‘Magic the Gathering’ fame, and Marc Bernardin, known for ‘Alphas’. The animation is being handled by Powerhouse Animation, also responsible for making ‘Castlevania‘ for Netflix.

When ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’ arrives on the streaming platform, it will join other Netflix anime content including ‘Devilman Crybaby‘, ‘Ultraman‘, and ‘Aggretsuko‘, apart from ‘Castlevania’ of course.

Kevin Smith spoke up about the opportunity of being at the helm of the ‘He-Man’ series, saying, “I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull but also their entire Universe. In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! … This is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!” Rob David added to this, saying, ” ’Masters of the Universe’ has been a cultural phenomenon for generations, inspiring fans to discover their own power within. Fans of this franchise have been waiting for the continuation of these characters, and Kevin Smith, as a ‘Masters’ superfan himself, is the perfect champion and partner to expand the canon through a dynamic animated series on Netflix.”

As a continuation of the 80s cartoon of the same name, the series will see a return to Eternia and will have some of our favorite characters from the iconic cartoon, including, He-Man, Orko, Cringer, and Man-At-Arms. They will be pitted against the villainous forces including Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Beast Man. It promises to be a battle between the guardians of Castle Grayskull and the evil legions of Snake Mountain. However, the synopsis teases that a battle will fracture Eternia. It will be up to Teela to solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power, as she races against time to prevent the end of her universe. On the course of her journey, she will uncover the secrets of Grayskull. Overall, the story promises to be an epic saga and we cannot wait for it.
