Last Man Standing Season 8: Premiere Date, Cast, Trailer, Recap, News

We have been falling in love with feel-good family series for decades now. Stories consisting of lovable, goofy characters with mismatched views on life, all living under the same roof in harmony have been the beating heart of many drama series on television. It all started around the late ’90s with the Happy Days(1974-1984) and Different Strokes(1978-1986). Characters that were relatable and had the same daily struggles as we did, spoke to us, made us laugh and cry as they lived, loved, learned and grew. ‘Last Man Standing’ also falls under the same category of shows: family-centric comedy-drama. It revolves around Mike Baxter, who is a married man and a father of three daughters who could not be more different from each other and a grandfather to his eldest daughter’s son.

Last Man Standing first premiered in 2011 and has been through quite a roller coaster ride. It started its run on ABC and continued there from 2011-2017, for six seasons, and entered broadcasting syndication in 2015 which gives the series right to broadcast the program by multiple stations, without going through one network. It was disclosed in May 2017 by media publications that the series won’t be picked up for a new season by the network despite it being ranked as the second highest rated sitcom on ABC for the year 2016-17. That’s when Fox picked up the show, but ABC was reluctant to cover the production cost of the series on behalf of Fox as the contract between ABC and 20th Century Fox Television had expired after six seasons.

Despite all the hiccups, Last Man Standing still stands its ground and has been renewed for yet another season. Here’s everything we know about it.

Last Man Standing Cast: Who’s in it?

The show stars Tim Allen as Michael or “Mike” Baxter a senior employee at a sporting goods store in Colorado.  He is the father of three and the marketing director of the store Outdoor Man who is old school and supports traditional values. He is tough on the outside but has a soft heart as most fathers do.

Nancy Travis stars as Vanessa Baxter, Mike’s Wife who is a geologist and goes through a career shift from working in an energy industry to a teacher and finally a tutor. She is known for her bad puns and is the glue that holds her family together.

Amanda Fuller (season 2- present) and Alexandra Krosney (season 1) play the eldest daughter Kristin Beth Baxter. Krosney was replaced by fuller without any clear, specific reasons. Kristen is a single mother who got pregnant out-of-wedlock in her senior year of high school and gave birth to her son Boyd. Kristen has also had quite a journey from living in her parent’s house to finally moving out in season 2 finale. She reconciles and gets married to Boyd’s father between seasons four and five and finally finds her feet when she becomes the manager of an upscale restaurant in season 5.

Molly Ephraim (seasons 1-6) and Molly McCook (season 7) star as Amanda Elaine or “Mandy” Baxter, the middle daughter who is known for frequently falling in trouble and making bad decisions. She started off as a free-spirited girl who was selfish and has gone through some professional and personal growth through the seasons. Mandy is not a good student but is a creative artist who starts her own clothing business from her parent’s basement. She gets married to Kyle Anderson in season 5 in the 100th episode of the series. Kyle who is an employee at the outdoor man is played by Christoph Sanders.

Hector Elizondo stars as Edward Alzate or “Ed” who is the quirky owner of the outdoor man and shares similar interests and values as Mike Baxter. Jordan Masterson as Ryan Vogelson who is Boyd’s Canadian father. Flynn Morrison(regular seasons 2-6) and Luke Kruntchev (recurring, season 1) as Boyd Baxter, son of Ryan and Kristin. Jonathan Adams as Chuck Larabee plays their next door neighbour.

Last Man Standing Plot: What is it about?

The basic plot of the show revolves around Mike Baxter, who is a senior executive and director of marketing for an outdoor sporting goods store chain based in Denver, Colorado. His home life initially just included his wife, three daughters, and a grandson, but later extends to the young men who are married to or dating his daughters.

The seventh season of the show differs from the previous ones in that there have been significant number of changes in the main cast with Molly Ephraim and Flynn Morrison who play Mandy Baxter and Boyd Baxter leaving the show. The seventh season moves forward with new challenges in the lives of the lovable characters. With Ryan focusing on his family life and Mike overcoming his emotional barrier after his father’s death, the story revolves around the family’s growth and their ability to coexist and love each other despite having divided opinions which is a necessary lesson intolerance in today’s times.

Last Man Standing Season 8: When will it premiere?

After facing an outrage from the show’s fans for cancellation which also resulted in a petition on Change.org., the show was picked up by FOX. Last Man Standing season 7 premiered on September 28, 2018. Tim Allen voiced his appreciation for the fans of the show for supporting and bringing it back. After the first episode of the show premiered Allen said “Everybody expected a reasonable amount of success, not what they got. It was quite startling and actually overwhelming.” It aired 22 episodes as part of season 7.

As far as the next season goes, we have good news for the fans. On April 18, 2019, Fox announced the show has been renewed for its eighth season. Considering the popularity of the show — it stands as the No. 1 scripted program on Friday nights — renewal was always on the card. Even though release date of the next season was not revealed, our best guess is that Last Man Standing season 8 will air sometime sometime in September 2019. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
