Lee Daniels to Wrap Up ‘Star’ as a “Movie of the Week” Special

Lee Daniels has revealed that the musical comedy series axed by Fox, ‘Star’ is set to return for “wrapping up things once and for all.” In a video posted on his Instagram Friday, the co-creator of the series announced the news to the glee of the fans who were disheartened by the unexpected cancellation of the series.

“Get ready for a two-hour gag!!!!!” Daniels said on his Instagram post. Check it out below.

But Daniels didn’t divulge any details about the return of ‘Star’ for the grand finale. According to a Deadline report, it would be a two-hour long television movie for Fox. 20th Century Fox TV and Fox Entertainment declined to comment.

Daniels promised a month ago that there would be a “closure” for ‘Star’ without clarifying the format. “The bad news is that ‘Star’ is not getting picked up for series,” he says in the Instagram video, “too long of a story to cry about.”

The news of the cancellation of ‘Star’ after three seasons descended upon the fans as a shocker in May. Daniels didn’t hide his disappointment while saying, “It ain’t happening,” he was quoted as saying by THR, “I did my best. Just know that like with Precious or Empire … The Butler, Monster’s Ball, the next thing I do is going to be Star. It will exist in all my work.”

Co-created by Daniels and Tom Donaghy, ‘Star’ follows the epic journey of three young female singers to realize their dream, to make it big in the music industry. Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Queen Latifah, Quincy Brown, and Amiyah Scott play the major roles in the series. The series was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Lee Daniels Entertainment.

In another blow to Daniels, Fox announced in May that the upcoming sixth season of his series ‘Empire’ would be it’s last. ‘Empire’ muddled with the Jussie Smollett scandal earlier this year. Though the cancellations are tagged as a major setback in the career of Daniels, the creator reacted in his characteristic style. “I’m NOT letting them STOP the CULTURE. SORRY!” he wrote on Instagram soon after Fox’s announcement.

‘Star’ premiered on December 14, 2016. Fox aired season 2 on September 27, 2017, as as a crossover with the Fox show ‘Empire.’ Season 3 debuted on September 26, 2018. On May 10, 2019, Fox pulled the plug on the show.
