Like a Boss (2020): Everything We Know

‘Like a Boss’ is an upcoming comedy movie that stars Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne in lead roles. Originally titled “Limited Partners,” the comedy can be described as a female buddy movie. Well yes, it does attack misogynist stereotypes but it is far from an academic lesson in gender studies. It’s all about the fun with ‘Like a Boss’ that features several kick-ass women providing all-out entertainment.

It is a very Hollywood movie and even features a David versus Goliath kind of tale. It might not boast of the most creative premise, but the movie does not aim for a standing ovation at the Oscars either. ‘Like a Boss’ is another good old mainstream movie revolving around two BFFs. It portrays a couple of friends with extremely different personalities but an impeccable chemistry who embark on various misadventures to the delight of viewers.

While buddy movies have enjoyed tons of commercial success since ages (just think of ‘Laurel and Hardy,’ ‘Bad Boys,’ or ‘Rush Hour,’ the list is endless!), they have also faced criticism. For starters, they are often dubbed to be escapist forms of writing and feminists have also pointed out how they relegate female-female relationships. While the latter gets automatically taken care of due to the leading characters being women, the former is something of an elitist, high-art comment that honestly, most people do not really care about.

As viewers, we love to de-stress through “escapist” media and little (or lots of) no-brainer entertainment to distract oneself from the melancholic humdrums of life never hurt anybody.

Like a Boss Plot: What is it about?

‘Like a Boss’ follows two women, Mel Paige and Mia Carter who are best friends despite their contradicting personalities. Together, they decide to start a beauty company but soon find their new business facing large amounts of debt. Luckily, a stalwart of the cosmetics industry, Claire Luna offers to invest in the women’s business and save them from their financial woes. However, the money comes with a few strings attached that puts Mel and Mia’s friendship in grave jeopardy. Soon, the two discover that Luna had more sinister intentions of copying their ideas. Mel and Mia must fight the big business in what looks like an uphill quest.

Like a Boss Cast: Who is in it?

American actress, Tiffany Haddish plays the role of Mel Paige, an inherently funny African-American woman. Her role can be compared to a number of funny, African-American characters whose accent and expressiveness becomes the source of comedy. Her portrayal of a bad-ass African-American woman is simply riveting and Paige’s character is one you would never get enough of. Just imagine Kevin Hart’s character in ‘Central Intelligence’ or ‘Ride Along’ or that of Chris Tucker in the ‘Rush Hour’ franchise. The character of Paige embodies that mold perfectly. Haddish rose to prominence with the sitcom, ‘The Carmichael Show’ and has been subsequently known for her appearances in ‘Keanu’ and ‘Girls Trip.’ She even voiced one of the titular characters of the animated show, ‘Tuca & Bertie.’

On the other hand, Rose Byrne plays the role of the other lead character- Mia Carter. Her role is akin to the many Caucasian heroes that feature alongside their funnier counterparts. Her character, one can say, serves as a foil to that of Mel Paige. Carter’s familiarity and sense of normalcy highlight Paige’s absurdity and raucousness to a new degree. Byrne is an extremely popular actress who is known for starring in movies such as ‘Troy,’ ‘Spy’ and ‘X-Men: First Class.’

Apart from Haddish and Byrne, Salma Hayek is also an integral part of the movie’s cast and plays the main antagonist, Claire Luna. She is known for her appearances in ‘Wild Wild West’ and ‘Grown Ups 2.’ Other cast members include Jennifer Coolidge of ‘2 Broke Girls’ fame and Billy Porter.

Like a Boss Crew: Who is Behind it?

The upcoming comedy movie is directed by Miguel Arteta, a Puerto Rican filmmaker who is known for the movies, ‘The Good Girl,’ ‘Chuck & Buck’ and ‘Cedar Rapids.’ He is a winner of the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award. Moreover, the movie has been written by Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly while Jas Shelton has been responsible for the cinematography. Christophe Beck and Jake Monaco have composed the movie’s music score.
