Lionel Richie is a music icon known all over the world. He was born Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. on June 20, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was a star tennis player who won a tennis scholarship to college but dropped out to pursue a career in music.

Richie began his musical career with the Commodores, a funk, and soul band in 1968 where he was the singer as well as the saxophonist. He ventured into his solo career in 1982. Richie’s debut album “Lionel Richie” (1982) included hit singles “Truly”, “My Love” and “You Are”. His next album “Can’t Slow Down” won two Grammy’s including Album of the Year. “Dancing on the Ceiling” (1986) included hits such as “Say You, Say Me”. He released a compilation of his greatest hits “Back to Front” in 1992. He released “Louder Than Words” in 1996, “Just Go” (2009) and “Tuskegee” (2010).

Richie has a talent for songwriting and one of his earliest compositions was “Lady” (1980) for Kenny Rogers. Richie has collaborated with many artists such as Diana Ross in “Endless Love” (1981), Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts etc. In 1985 Richie and Michael Jackson wrote the popular charity single “We Are The World”. Such was its popularity all over the world that it went on to sell more than 20 million copies.

Richie has won four Grammy Awards for singles “We Are The World” which he sang with Michael Jackson. They won Song of the Year Award in 1985. He won Album of the Year Award for “Can’t Slow Down” in 1984 as well as Best Pop Vocal Performance and Producer of the Year (Non-Classical) in 1984. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for “Say You, Say Me” in 1986 as well as Best Original Song from the Academy Awards. This song was featured in the film “White Nights”. He was nominated for Best Original Song for “Endless Love” in 1982.

Richie was a part of the British TV show “An Audience with Lionel Richie” which he hosted and performed live in 2006. At present, Richie tours extensively and is especially popular in Middle Eastern countries. He is also one of the judges in “American Idol”. Richie has three children. His eldest daughter, Nicole Richie is adopted. He and his second wife, Diane Alexander have a son Miles Brockman and a daughter Sofia Richie.
