‘Lovecraft Country,’ which takes inspiration from the eponymous 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, is a horror drama that brings in an addictive mix of Lovecraftian lore and the multi-layered American history. Although the series is a fictional story, it does a wonderful job of unraveling the systemic problems that plagued our past. Coupled with some heroic performances, it does full justice to the source material. Of course, the show’s first iteration opened to impressive reviews and promising viewership, and this brings us to the next question: will there be a ‘Lovecraft Country’ season 2? Let’s find out.
Lovecraft Country Season 2 Release Date
‘Lovecraft Country’ season 1 premiered on August 16, 2020, on HBO. It wrapped up with its tenth episode on October 18, 2020. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the inaugural outing debuted to ‘Watchmen’-esque ratings. On a good note, the numbers remained almost unchanged throughout the season’s run. Additionally, the show uses its source material (the eponymous book) only as a jumping-off point.
Therefore, there is tremendous scope to extend the storyline further. What’s more? Even if you consider only the novel, season 1 does not include all of its eight different tales. Again, the finale ends on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. This might mean only one thing – creator Misha Green planned on setting up a premise for a bolder follow-up edition. Star Jurnee Smollett also echoes the same sentiments. In an interview with Deadline, she said, “I mean, it would be so wrong to folks, the way episode 10 ends, to not do another season.”
Since HBO has not made any official announcement yet, the fate of ‘Lovecraft Country’ still remains in the hands of the channel. However, considering the scope in terms of the ratings and fan response, the second season is almost a no-brainer. If HBO gives it a go-ahead soon, we can expect ‘Lovecraft Country’ season 2 to release sometime in late 2021 or early 2022.
Lovecraft Country Season 2 Cast: Who can be in it?
We expect most of the major stars to make a comeback in the second season. This includes Jurnee Smollett as Letitia Lewis aka Leti, Tic’s talented photographer friend, and Jonathan Majors as Atticus Freeman aka Tic, the central male protagonist. We then have Aunjanue Ellis as Hippolyta Freeman (Tic’s aunt), Courtney B. Vance as George (Tic’s uncle), Wunmi Mosaku as Ruby Baptiste (Leti’s estranged half-sibling), and Abbey Lee as Christina (the Order of the Ancient Dawn’s leader’s daughter).
Rounding up the lead cast is Jamie Chung as Ji-Ah, Jada Harris as Diana Freeman, and Michael K. Williams as Montrose Freeman. In ‘Lovecraft Country,’ several characters are killed off, and then they are often resurrected. Now, George dies in one of the episodes, but that does not mean we won’t be seeing more of him. Everything depends on how the story unfolds in the future. Therefore, if there are any additions/eliminations from the above-mentioned main cast, we will update this section.
Lovecraft Country Season 2 Plot: What can it be About?
The final episode of ‘Lovecraft Country’ season 1 takes us back to Ardham. The finale ends on a massive cliffhanger with multiple deaths. While Christina and Leti are engaged in a fight, Christina tells her that she killed Ruby. She then throws Leti off the tower and proceeds to go to the altar to sacrifice Tic. She transfers his powers onto herself and gains immortality. Once that is done, Christina relishes in her newfound perpetuity and powers.
Leti somehow arrives and continues to complete Hannah’s spell. After minor hiccups, she succeeds in doing so with Ji-ah’s help, and Christina is robbed off her immortality. Devastated, the gang leaves with Tic’s cold dead body. In the final moments, Dee arrives at the altar with the shoggoth and bionic arm given to her by Tic. Christina gives out an agonized cry for help, and Dee moves towards her, only to kill her with her bionic arm.
Season 2 will pick up straight from the ending of the first season. The second season will most likely answer the burning questions regarding Ruby’s existence, Tic’s resurrection, Dee’s changed attitude, etc. The writers have already taken the creative freedom to diverge from the source material. Therefore, the next season can include a mix of multiple plot arcs – each more explosive than we have seen in season 1. Again, since all of the book’s chapters are not incorporated in the inaugural outing, we expect season 2 to include some parts from the original written material.
