MacGruber 2: Everything We Know

From a recurring sketch on ‘Saturday Night Live’ to a full theatrical release, to now possibly a franchise, ‘MacGruber’ is already a true cult classic in the spoof comedy genre. The titular star of the franchise is special operations agent MacGruber, played by American comedian Will Forte. MacGruber as a character has his roots in a sketch of the same name on the late-night show, ‘Saturday Night Live’.

Written by Jorma Taccone and Will Forte, each episode of the sketch involved MacGruber trying and failing to disarm a ticking bomb due to his own ineptitude, arrogance, and incompetence. The sketches skyrocketed in popularity, landing MacGruber a series of Pepsi commercials and eventually his own feature-length film in 2010. The movie was widely panned by critics and commercial performance was also quite poor, with ‘MacGruber’ failing to recover even its relatively small $10 million production budget.

Nevertheless, the movie eventually went on to become a cult classic, widely loved by fans for its sheer absurdity and brazenness. There have been talks of a sequel ever since 2012 when Taccone mentioned it in an interview. If you were wondering about what’s going on behind the scenes with ‘MacGruber 2’, read on to find out everything we know.

MacGruber 2 Plot: What Can It Be About?

‘MacGruber’ released in 2010 after the success of the character’s Pepsi commercials and ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch. The character is a parody of the 1985 spy action-adventure TV series ‘MacGyver’ and is also inspired by the great action movies of the 80s and 90s such as ‘Lethal Weapon’, ‘Rambo’ and ‘Die Hard’.

The plot of ‘MacGruber’ follows ex-Green Beret, Navy SEAL, and Army Ranger MacGruber as he tries to foil his nemesis Dieter Von Cunth, who has stolen a nuclear warhead and is hell-bent on destroying Washington DC. Along for the ride with MacGruber are Vicki St. Elmo, Lt. Dixon Piper, and Col. Jim Faith.

On September 26, 2016, co-writer Jorma Taccone confirmed in a Twitter post that writing for ‘MacGruber 2’ was underway.

New details about the project came out a year later when Taccone revealed that the sequel would not be titled ‘MacGruber 2’. He also talked about taking a leaf out of the ‘Bourne’ series playbook for the next MacGruber project. This could be hinting towards a storyline involving MacGruber being afflicted from amnesia, which would admittedly be an ideal fit for a spy parody comedy movie like the ‘MacGruber’ sequel.

Another possibility is a fugitive storyline where an isolated and betrayed ‘MacGruber’ could be on the run from various enemies who want him dead, much like the ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and its sequel ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. We can also expect trademark ‘MacGruber’ moments such as hilariously ridiculous sex scenes, over the top action, and ‘MacGruber’ bundling his way through situations in the most graceless manner possible.

However, the new ‘MacGruber’ movie may not be a movie at all. In fact, in all likelihood, it is set to be a television series. In early 2019, a movie sequel was scrapped in favor of a new TV series, bringing the character back full circle considering the influence of the ‘MacGyver’ TV series on the sketch and the movie.

Much of the original cast of ‘MacGruber’ could also be set to reprise their roles in the TV show, with Taccone saying:
It’s everyone. Val was blown up pretty badly, he’ll have half a head. Everyone is so down. What’s nice is that, when you make something that had the heartbreak of not doing so well financially… I would feel terrible if the people involved were embarrassed about it, but Ryan loves that shit, Kristen loves that shit, all the people involved are so psyched.

This means that we will see the return of fan-favorite characters Dieter Von Cunth and MacGruber’s love interest Vicki Gloria St. Elmo. The only hurdle in the way right now is a financial one, owing to the fact that ‘MacGruber’ was a colossal commercial flop. Thus, there have not been many willing to fund a sequel. Till someone is, fans will have to continue their excruciating wait.

MacGruber 2 Cast and Crew: Who Can Be the People Behind the Movie?

‘MacGruber’ stars American actor, comedian and writer Will Forte as the eponymous character. He is joined by Kristen Wiig as Vicki Gloria St. Elmo, Ryan Philippe as Lt. Dixon Piper, Powers Boothe as Col. Jim Faith and Val Kilmer as Dieter Von Cunth. Several WWE wrestlers including Chris Jericho, The Great Khali, Big Show, Mark Henry also make short appearances.

Judging by what Taccone has said so far, we can expect Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillipe, and Val Kilmer all to reprise their respective roles in the upcoming ‘MacGruber’ TV series.

Taccone is already working on the story, as we know, and Forte might be chipping in as well. It is likely that the former helms the sequel, just like the first film.

MacGruber 2 Release Date: When Can It Premiere?

Currently, it is hard to pin down exactly when we will see the ‘MacGruber’ TV series come out. A sequel to ‘MacGruber’ has been rumored for the best part of the recently passed decade, but we haven’t seen anything concrete of the TV series yet.

However, the production of the original movie was famously fast, with the entire filming process only taking 28 days. There is yet hope that we could see the ‘MacGruber’ TV series release as soon as late 2021. Realistically speaking though, the ‘MacGruber’ sequel is likely to release in 2022.
